TOPIC: Feel the thunder!!!

In Oregon our High Schools can be a little weird in their mascots:<br /><br />The Tillamook Cheesemakers (Gouda or sharp cheddar)<br />The Astoria Fishermen (look out you sardines out there)<br />The Seaside Seagulls (whoa--always been afraid of Jonathan Livingston)<br />The Jefferson Democrats  (very strong young Republican club there)<br /><br />But I was in Yuma, Arizona last weekend and think I found the ultimate role model mascot.  I wonder how PC this is:<br /><br />The Yuma High School Criminals (I kid you not.  That would strike fear in the heart of every little ninth grader who is at a rival high school).<br /><br />Of course when I was in college in Ohio, we were the Denison Big Red.  Nobody could tell me the Big Red what.  I cringed to think that a University would make an adjective into a noun, but universities are never wrong are they.<br /><br /><br />Widseth

Then there are the mascots that no one knows what the heck it is.<br /><br />Go Southern Illinois University SALUKIS!<br /><br />(BTW, it's an egyptian dog.  Why an egyptian dog?  Because southern illinois is known as "Little Egypt".  Why is it called "Little Egypt"?  No one knows.<br /><br />So they have a mascot that no one understands -- based on a moniker that no one explain.<br /><br />

doesn't southern illinois have some native american earth mounds similiar to pyramids? that might explain the term little egypt.

Alfred University's team is named "Saxons". (The school is in upstate NY incase you are wondering.) My historian friend pointed out to me that Alfred the Great (who the school is supposed to be named after) fought against the Saxons. My friend Scott suggested the school was named after Batman's butler.<br />David (S.)

Oh, yeah...I forgot.<br /><br />Lori went to Wethersfield School -- home of the Flying Geese!<br /><br />Not to be confused with the Walking Geese, the Standing Geese or the Running Geese.  Apparently, these geese actually fly.  Who would have thunk it.<br /><br />[glow=black,2,300]Go Boilermakers![/glow]

My community college is the Chaparrals.  They're a kind of roadrunner (like the bird), a carry-over from the days when classes were held in buildings around the county (thus, students had to drive all over to get to classes and were nicknamed "road-runners").  My middle school was the Trailblazers (Blazers for short).  And of course, now, the Illinois State Redbirds, changed in 1923 from the Teachers.

I'm an alumna of Western Kentucky University.  Our nickname is the Hilltoppers and our mascot is named Big Red.  For those of you who watch ESPN a lot, you may have seen him.  Big Red is the favorite mascot of ESPN and he's been in their commercials for the past several years.<br /><br />Kim
