TOPIC: American Cancer Society

American Cancer Society 17 years 6 months ago #1

I just got back from Atlanta tonight. I was one of five representatives from my county that got invited to attend a national training meeting for mature, tenured events for Relay for Life. There were over 250 people there representing over 40 relays from around the country. It was such a positive and productive event. I don't know that I've ever been quite involved in something like that. If any of you ever get the chance to participate in Relay or become involved with the American Cancer Society, please do so. You'll get such a good feeling out of it and be doing a wonderful thing at the same time.

Kim

The event really was a lot of fun. So many great ideas came out of it. I also got to meet a really diverse group of people. There were even representatives from Hawaii.

Kim

Way to go, Kim. If each person would get involved with one project like this, there would a vast improvment in help and services for others.

I wish I could do something at Indy to try and raise money for my team. There's such a large audience of people there. It falls after Relay, but it could go towards the next year's total. I met people at the meeting who are on teams that raise 100,000 dollars. I thought it was interesting as well that 1 in 10 Americans are Relayers. Also if any of you watch Extreme Home Makeover, the episode on Nov. 12th will feature Relay For Life. The woman who's house is being redone is deeply involved in Relay. ABC really bought into the idea and wanted to show people what it was about. On three days notice a relay was organized that went on for five days while they were redoing the house. They built a room in the house that was dedicated to relay. I think that's so cool.

Kim

It probably won't total to very much, but I am planning to have a booth at Indy again and I'll donate $1.00 for every book I sell at Indy. Maybe you could get Wizards of the Coast or other vendors to do something similar.

Count me in.

Widseth

Hey Kim

A thought, what about gathering stuff to auction off at the Indy GenCon auction and what you get from the auction can be for the Relay Fund Raiser. I don't know if Gen Con would let you kinda tag/indicate that the items are being auctioned off for charity. If so, they might get a bit more attention.

I'd be willing to donate some things I can make up with what materials I have to auction off. Like drawstring bags or what not if you think that would be of any help/interest.

Thoughts?

what about a TD relay team?

or a mini relay @ gencon....I'm sure they could be talked into the idea.
like a TD mini Relay.....round up donors for $x per room survived?....hmmmmm

Could you see about that? I could round up several folks to donate, if it was officially supported.

All of you are giving me some great ideas. Keep them coming. I'll have to mull these over and figure out what will work. DD, I like your idea about the Gencon auction. I bet Josh Berling could help me out with the details on that. Widseth, thanks for the donation from the books you sell next year. TDers are some of the best people in the world.

Kim

Yeah, I thought of him too. I sent him a PM about this last night. I'm sure you could get some gaming or related donations from the gang here to auction off in GenCon's auction to benefit the relay.
If there is anything I can do to help, let me know. *hugs*

Just a small update. As of today my relay team with Walgreens has turned in 1,114.66 to the American Cancer Society. That's just in 9 weeks and almost 600 dollars of that is from our collection buckets in the three stores that are involved with this. I'm still trying to come up with ideas for fundraising at Gencon. It's after Christmas so things are more back to normal for me and hopefully I can think a little clearer.

Kim
