TOPIC: Unfinished Tolkien work to be published in '07

Tolkien has been edited by his son into a completed work and will be released next spring, the U.S. and British publishers announced Monday.<br /><br />Christopher Tolkien has spent the past 30 years working on "The Children of Hurin," an epic tale his father began in 1918 and later abandoned. Excerpts of "The Children of Hurin," which includes the elves and dwarves of Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" and other works, have been published before.<br /><br />"It has seemed to me for a long time that there was a good case for presenting my father's long version of the legend of the 'Children of Hurin' as an independent work, between its own covers," Christopher Tolkien said in a statement.<br /><br />The new book will be published by Houghton Mifflin in the United States and HarperCollins in England.<br /><br />J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings Trilogy" has sold more than 50 million copies and was also adapted into a blockbuster, Academy Award-winning trio of films. A stage version is scheduled to open next year.<br />

Sounds great.  Thanks for the tip.  I would love to see them make movies of the Hobbit, but especially some of the tales out of the Silmarillion.  Peter Jackson can forget King Kong get back to Tolkien as far as I am concerned.  Has anyone heard the touching story about what is inscribed on Tolkien and his wife's grave stones--Beren on his and Luthien on hers.  He was a romantic for sure.  I would love to see the Fall of Gondolin made into a movie or the destruction of Numenor.<br /><br /><br />Widseth

Peter Jackson's making some really cool sounding movies based on books (I'm sorry I forget the name) where it's essentially an alternate historical fiction but instead of planes theres dragons (from what I understand)... it sounds really cool, so I don't mind waiting for the hobbit.

Pffft. As if they weren't shamelessly milking it before. Now it's pay 25.95 to see what our dad once scrawled on some cocktail napkins about dwarven sexual practices while loaded. They should at least tell you what % of the final product were tolkien's own words and what amount his son filled in. Besides, I heard the son was a douche and was the one who held up the hobbit movie in limbo for all those years.

But really, can it be any worse than the job Herbert's son is doing with Dune? I mean at least Tolkien's son is smart enough to use daddy's writing and not make it up himself...

Wouldn't know. I didn't care for dune and never got pastthe first book. I always meant to give it another whirl, and even have a boxset of them all in paperback, but haven't gotten around to it.

It's decent past the first book, but it starts getting a little I don't know... "wacky" after book 3.

All I remember now is that some weird pain box thing wigged me out a bit. I'm much more of a fantasy reader than sci-fi.

I can't believe the gom jabbar wigged you out henwy.  Jeff--next dungeon you definately have to have a box in one of the rooms called  the box of pain--just for henwy.  You have to stick your hand in to test your worthiness before you can go to the next room or loose half your hp.  <br /><br /><br />Widseth
