TOPIC: The Real Reason Goblins Hate Squirrels

The Real Reason Goblins Hate Squirrels 2 months 4 weeks ago #1

Someone was asking how the bitter rivalry between GibGub and Grunnel started:

It all started before the age of man.

In those day goblins were renowned for their crafting skills. Some would even say that the dwarves learned from them, but the dwarves will dispute this. All manor of wonderous thing were crafted by the goblins. Dancing swords, tankards of endless ale, tables that cooked a feast, and many more.

The King of the Squirrels, Gibdronicus, grew jealous of the goblincraft. Because of the squirrel’s small size and tiny hands, they were unable to craft anything but the simplest of things. But squirrels were skilled and finding all manner of things. Things that had been lost in previous ages had been found again by the tribe of squirrels.

King Gibdronicus approached the greatest goblin smith with an offer. “Make for me a magical acorn that can summon nuts from far and wide, and in return my people will find all the greatest items for you to craft with.” Now finding all the right materials that went into crafting was always a challenge for the goblins. Having someone else that could find needed items and that had a reputation of being able to find what was lost was too good of an offer.

The goblin smith labored for forty days and forty nights upon The Acorn. All the other goblins were duly impressed with the focus and determination that the smith was putting into The Acorn. Truly this would be the greatest example of goblincraft that would last through the ages.

When The Acorn was completed, the smith presented the greatest artifact ever made by goblins to King Gibdronicus. The King was extremely impressed with the craftmanship of The Acorn. It summoned pistachios, almonds, walnuts, pine, macadamia, and more that had been lost to time. In return, the Squirrels kept up their end of the bargain.
Wood from the World Tree? A simple task. Tears from a mermaid? The squirrels didn’t like getting wet, but it wasn’t difficult. Incense from the temples of the gods? Easy. Every item that the goblins needed, the squirrels were able to acquire.

But King Gibdronicus and his greatest general, Gubzor, had not been entirely honest with the goblins. Everything they took, they told the owners that the goblins had forced them to take it against their will. They were sweet, innocent squirrels and did not want to be taking things from the gods or mermaids or the World Tree. This created anger towards the goblins. How dare they enslave another race to do their bidding?

The gods and the other races banded together to punish the goblins. Swift was their wrath. Many goblin towns were destroyed. The goblins were driven underground where they found safety near the Darkrift. In the exodus many secrets were lost. The greatest goblins smiths did not survive the squirrel betrayal. As time passed, the goblins forgot the details of the betrayal that drove them underground. But they never forgot the names of their hated foes, King Gibdronicus and General Gubzor. Over time the two names became reduced and combined. Thus, GibGub is perhaps one of the most hated names a squirrel could have.

Ha! Too funny! Thanks.

(At some point I just MIGHT finish writing my novel "The Secret of Trees". That has much squirrel lore inside.)
