TOPIC: Please send healing thoughts

This morning at 3 am, my phone rang. Never a good sign. I saw on the caller ID that it was my step-father's cell phone. That's even worse, he rarely calls me, and it's usually an emergency. Something was wrong with my mom, and the ambulance had just arrived. I almost beat them to the hospital. <br /><br />We still don't know for sure what happened, but believe she either had a minor stroke or a seizure of some type. She doesn't have any paralysis, but was having speech difficultie and short-term memory loss. Her CAT scan was normal, but we are still waiting on the results from an MRI and some other tests. <br /><br />She's only 63, and while she has several health conditions (some of them rare or unusual), none are neurological or cardiac in nature except for minor high blood pressure which has been under control for years with medication. So this came as a major shock. The speech problem is pretty much gone at the moment, it's what they call aphasia. She can see the word she wants in her head, but can't get it to come out of her mouth. What's really strange is that she can spell it out in sign language. <br /><br />Anyway, I'd really appreciate it if y'all would send good thoughts our way. Our worst fear at the moment is it happening again. Our second worst fear is that they won't find anything to tell them what it was or how to prevent it from reoccuring.

Heidi, I know how you must feel.  I went through something similar with my mother a while back.  Keep strong and try to be as positive as you can.  Worry about what you can control and leave the rest to fate.  That's all you can really do.<br /><br />My thoughts are with you and your family.

aphasia commonly effects the speech center of the brain - usually caused by strokes - your mother can communicate by sign language because it's located in a different place int he brain.<br /><br />My step-mom had it bad.  <br /><br />Much love and caring going your way, hun. Thanks for all your kind words and prayers. Mom is doing ok this morning, although she continues to have a severe headache. They are giving her Tylenol, which helps a little, but don't want to try anything stronger until the test results come back. <br /><br />The aphasia seems to be gone for the moment. She is mainly tired, and the headache makes it hard for her to sleep Hopefully we'll get the test results sometime today and they will be able to treat it more aggressively.
