Gift Card Giveaway for Participating in Covid Distributed computing projects! 7 months 1 week ago #1

Folding@Home and Rosetta@Home (see link to my other thread here: www.truedungeon.com/forum?view=topic&catid=8&id=251023 ) are providing valuable data to researchers to find treatments for Covid. Since TD runs at conventions (mass gatherings), it is unlikely there will be True Dungeon events until the restrictions on mass gatherings have been lifted. Given this fact, and to hopefully help get conventions back on track as soon as possible, I have decided to partner with Trent Tokens to give away gift cards for people who participate in donating computer time to one or both projects.

The Giveaway:
Trent and I will be giving away 3 $50 Trent Token gift cards:
One card will go to one random qualifying participant of the Folding@Home Team True Dungeon for the contest duration
One card will go to one random qualifying participant of the Rosetta@Home Team True Dungeon for the contest duration
One card will go to one random qualifying participant of BOTH projects on Team True Dungeon for the contest duration

Random winners will be selected via the final digits of the team total points page at noon eastern on June 1st.. Example - lets say we have 30 participants:

For the Rosetta@Home gift card and folding@home gift cards, I will select the last 2 digits of the combined points scored for that project for the team at noon June 1st. If the combined points are 105,107, team member 07 would be the winner. If the instead the the final points are 105,131 (the last 2 digits exceed the participating user count) I will shift 1 digit to the left, thus making user 13 the winner. Should it be impossible to select a winner in this manner, I'll move to recent credit, and then a dice roll if necessary. This method of winner selection will be adjusted by number of participants (if we only have 9 participants, I'll only select from the last digit)

For selecting the winner from people participating in both projects, I will append the Rosetta@Home list to the Folding@Home list, add the points of the two projects together, and select the winner using the same method described above.

Participation Dates:
The participation window will run from May 1st to May 31st.

The participation window starts May 1st to give people the chance to install the software, get setup, and poke holes in my giveaway logic. Additionally, folding@home has gotten a lot of media attention, so they are having some infrastructure problems loading everyone's clients. Hopefully, in 2 weeks they will have resolved some of their issues.

If this giveaway has good participation, I will run additional participation windows with more prizes.

Participation Goals:
I want anyone with a computer that can install the software to be able to participate. That said, the contribution of computer time is more valuable if it is at regular intervals for the duration of the giveaway. So, to qualify for the gift card, you must reach the following credits / work units by May 30th:

Rosetta@Home
Average credits of 300 points as displayed on the True Dungeon Team page (my 10 year old laptop running 12 hours / is generating about 300 points average). Modern CPUs will easily generate 1000+ credits per day at 12 hours per day.

Folding@Home
Average of 1 work unit per day, which is 30 total (My 5 year old media center PC running 24 hours / day is completing about 2 work units per day). Modern video cards will easily complete 3 to 20 work units per day.

Details about the projects can be found in this post:
www.truedungeon.com/forum?view=topic&catid=8&id=251023

FAQ:
How do I register for Folding@home with Team True Dungeon?
For Folding@home, first create a passkey here: apps.foldingathome.org/getpasskey
(Information about what a passkey is, is here: foldingathome.org/support/faq/points/passkey/ )

Then install folding@home. When the installation completes, you will be asked if you want to fold with an identity or anonymously
1) go here and click on the link to install: foldingathome.org/start-folding/
2) After installation, a browser window will pop up with some options.
3) Choose fold with identity
4) Choose name (as created with passkey)
5) Add team number (261246)
6) Add Passkey

How do I register for Boinc / Rosetta@home with Team True Dungeon?
1) Install Boinc w/ Virtualbox: boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php
2) After installation it will ask you which project you want to join (select Rosetta@home)
3) Select new user and input your user details.
4) After your user is created, go to this web page: boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/team_display.php?teamid=19992 and click "Join this team"

Is it safe to run on my computer?
Yes - I've been running BOINC projects for years, and folding@home recently without any issues. That said, running your CPU and / or video card non stop will heat up your computer - this may cause crashes if you set "high" power level and run always for computers with insufficient cooling (laptops are the most likely computers to have cooling problems long term).

I can only support 1 project, which project should I support?
If you have a gaming video card from the last 3 years, you will get the best return on folding@home, as Rosetta cannot use video cards for science.

Since Rosetta@home can only use CPUs, if you have an older computer or one without a gaming video card, setup Rosetta.

Additionally, Rosetta@home has not gotten the press that Folding@Home has gotten, so there is much more work available for your computer to use.

I have a fairly new gaming computer, can I run both projects on the same computer?
Yes! In this case, you would use your video card for Folding@home and your CPU for Rosetta@home
1) I would suggest configuring Folding@Home first as above. After you've installed F@H, start the advanced control, go to configure, click slots, highlight CPU and click remove.
2) Once Folding@Home is configured, download and install boinc as above.

You should now be participating in both projects on one computer.

You can also participate in Rosetta@home through your android. It probably works for iPhones too but I can't speak to that. (I have standards).

For Android, go to the Google Play store and search for Boinc. When you start it up it'll ask what project you want to support (Rosetta@home), then your Boinc user name and password. It's extremely simple to set up. It'll only run when your phone is plugged in, wifi is turned on, and screen is off.

What is average credit? It's definitely not daily. I've been doing Boinc for 3 days, generated 7500 points, and my average credit is 650.

Its, uh, a little complicated.

The really, really high level is:
1 credit is about 9.3 minutes on a single core of a Intel i7-4770. (More powerful hardware will spend less time getting 1 credit, less powerful hardware will spend more time)

Recent average credit is average credit per day over the last 2 weeks. Credits older than 2 weeks are weighted lower.

The exact measure per Boinc is here:

Is anyone here a facebook person that can share this thread / details to try to pull some participants? Currently, odds of winning a gift card are fantastic, so join in and take a shot!

With 10 days to go until the start of the Giveaway window, we have 3 people participating in Rosetta at home:

boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/team_members.php?teamid=19992&offset=0&sort_by=expavg_credit

and

10 in Folding at home (one of which is me, guess you can't guess which one! )
stats.foldingathome.org/team/261246

Note, I do not qualify for a prize, but I added one of my computers as I wanted to get the Folding at Home team ranking high enough to be visible in other tracking sites, such as this one ( folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=261246 ).

I've been on the TD team since Mike N. Established it and posted it on FB. ( I was folding before that, but not on a team) I really like this promotion, so Thanks to Trent and Endgame for making it happen (Probably not going to get a Passkey, so I won't be competing..)
Good luck to everyone!

This Is a fantastic point - the points are greatly affected by the passskey. I’ll switch it from points to number of work units - 30 WU would be one per day. Think that would be sufficient for participation for people with newer hardware while not being a obstacle for people with older gear?

One work unit per day will probably work. I've been running Folding@home for about two weeks now, strictly through my video card. I have video card that was high end but not top of the line when I bought it two years ago, and I've done 25 work units while keeping it processing on full almost all day (I flip it down to light when I'm working on my computer). To hit the goal someone with an older/non gaming computer would need to do about half that, it seems reasonable.

Of course, that's with the assumption that there's work every day. Mine's been idle since last night because there's no work, it just rechecks every two hours or so to see if there's work yet.
