I know the books were good but they aren't cannon any more they are now classified as "legacy" expect a few things from them but they will for now on be 'wrong'. Clearly Han Solo knew who she was as he told Maz Kanata, who slightly cryptically tried to tell her the truth.

I agree with most everything you said but this. I do think it is likely and probably that Rey is Luke's daughter, but I don't think it is a given.

Don't get me wrong, I really liked the movie but was anyone else disappointed that it was just an Episode 4 reboot?

Message hidden in an droid is being sought by the bad guys. Droid ends up in the hands of an orphan on a dessert planet is forced to join the rebellion after their life on that planet is upended. Large planet sized weapon is destroying other planets. A small group of people are sent to disable the shields so an attack can be made on this weapon (ok a little episode 6 there). Weapon is just about to destroy the planet they are trying to save when one star fighter is able to fly in and make the impossible trek to make the final shot to destroy the weapon. They escape just before it explodes into smithereens.

There are so many more subtle parallels but these to me just seemed way too obvious. Obvious to the point that it seemed like that was their goal all along. Reboot Star Wars for today's kids but give the parents something new to enjoy.

Again not saying I didn't think it was great but just a little bothered by the lack of originality in the plot. Hopefully the upcoming sequels have a lot more originality to them.

I was fine with this being a remake. A New Hope was a remake of The Hidden Fortress by Akira Kurosawa, so JJ just Lucased Lucas. With the understanding that the next two be original.

And Han plays Obi-Wan. Luke plays Yoda.

I am sad that it was essentially a reboot. I also do not believe for a second that Han had never used Chewie's bowcaster before.

I, myself, would have enjoyed a "blue fuzz" Vader appearing at that moment saying "idiot, you're doing it all wrong."

Or better yet, a "blue fuzz" Anakin saying, "Let me tell you this thing ends, and it's not well for you."

But I'm sure Kylo doesn't know that particular force skill.
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

I got the impression Han had never used THAT bowcaster. It's not the same one Chewie had in A New Hope.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?
Please post TDb corrections/suggestions in this thread .

Han and Leai's youngest is actually Anakin. Who, in the EU, went to the Dark Side, IIRC. It happened in non-Zahn novels so I didn't read them.

Actually, Jacen went to the dark side. He tried to corrupt Ben (Luke and Mara's son.) But, none of that happened in any Zahn books.

Yeah Anakin Solo dies doing something noble. I don’t remember what but it was against the Vong.

Thanks! I knew I was probably wrong because I never read the non-Zahn novels.

I liked the movie a lot, it felt very much Star Wars. But I didn't buy the fact that the villain who was so well trained in the Force he could stop and freeze a blaster bolt could be beaten in a lightsaber battle by a former stormtrooper and a scavenger who, although she was force-sensitive, had no formal weapon training.

Just because his special talent with the Force is energy manipulation and mind reading doesn't automatically make him a light saber expert. If you don't practice the skill you can't be an expert.

To me, it seems he was making up for his lack of light saber skills by carrying a bigger weapon and using it as an intimidation factor. A good comparison would be an inexperienced fighter using a 2-handed sword (Kylo Ren's light saber being equivalent to this) and going up against a thief using a long sword with experience in using it.

Rey is Luke's kid. All the pieces add up to this. Sorry Zahn novel fans. Remember we know Luke knows how to make a saber.

I'm going with the Stormtrooper armor is as effective as wearing a plastic bag. Rex (Clone Trooper) in the Rebels cartoon show (which is canon) made the comment a few episodes ago how crappy the new armors are compared to Clone armor. LOL!!

I'm leaning more that way that Rey is Luke's daughter, too. The more I think about it the more it makes sense. But! I'm still hoping for her being the twin of Kylo Ren.

All Jedi know how to create light sabers. As part of their training they need to find an adagar (sp?) crystal in tune with their Force ability and construct a light saber. Obviously, that is back in the Jedi Academy days as part of their curriculum which hasn't been around in decades. So, either Luke continued using what curriculum he learned from Yoda or people just use the light sabers they can salvage from all the dead Jedi post-Order 66.

I believe Kylo Ren created his own and just did a really crappy job by going for intimidation instead of style. Much like an angry child would do.

+1

Also, my wife mentioned the New Hope similarities as we discussed it driving home from seeing it. My comment was simply: "... Or the Empire just likes big flashy weapons of mass destruction and lack originality."

Well this one was effective at taking out the New Republic. If it had 5 more seconds it would have taken out the resistance too. I mean come on who thinks that some brash pilot is going to fly through the shield at greater than lightspeed. He has to be the cockiest SOB ever or the luckiest. :)
