Re: Next Great GenCon Event Contest 18 years 1 month ago #13
Hey David. Cool idea. I haven't read the rules for the Contest but was the idea to design a game that was cool AND economically feasible? If so, I think what might have been the largest obstacle for you is the throughput. Four people every 25 minutes might have made it cost prohibitive.

Yeah, one of the first events I was thinking about was a fantasy based adventure with 5 or 6 players and released that the cost of the tickets would be something like $20 for 25 minutes. But with the space adventure it would have been flexible to have group sizes of 6 to 10 people with the game length varying from 15 to 25 minutes (depending how good you are). Combined with shows in Indy and SoCal the cost of the tickets could have been around $8 which seemed more reasonable. I was thinking the equipment costs might be the financial difficulty. But I was planning on managing that with borrowing and renting equipment. It wouldn't be easy but that seemed to be part of the challenge I was looking forward too. =)
David (S.)

Here's the page that has all the rules, etc.

I'm not sure if they posted the finalist on the main site, but here's a copy of what Rennie posted on the forum:

After much delay and a lengthy deliberation process, I'm proud to annouce the semi-finalists of Gen Con's Next Great Event Contest!

(Drum Roll Please....)

"A Murder most 'Fowl'er" by Robin Breeden, Phil Alar & Phil Velikan of Carmel, IN

"Lock and Load Sniper Arena" by Rachel "Tinker" Jones & Shane "Keokunk" Jones of Hazleton, IN

"Gen Con Mini 400" by Bob Cahill of Indianapolis, IN

We had over 80 event submissions this year, everyone! Thanks, and please don't be disappointed because, depending on the success of this event, we may be doing it again next year!!!!

So, anyone who missed out this year, start brainstorming now for if they do it again next year!!

If the shields of a gunner’s station failed, they were out of the game (though they would get a little pin of a red shirt. Do you know why? =D).

Of course because the guy to die in the original Star Trek was always wearing a Red Shirt. =D

Kirk: This is a dangerous mission and one of us could possibly die. The away team will consist of myself, Mr. Spock, Bones...and Ensign Ricky.

Ensign Ricky: Ahh crap.

Yeah, I thought this group would figure that quickly. I also politly borrowed (i.e.-stole) an idea from True Dungeon with handing out a "medal" (button in shape of medal) if the group won the game with the mission name on it.
David (S.)

I am trying to remember the Great Saturday Night live Star Trek line it was something like:

Kirk: The boarding party will consist of myself, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy and three people in red t-shirts who will not be comming back.

Dammit Jim...I'm a Doctor, not a brick layer.

I was waiting for months to see if brick layers were going to get something like that on a T-shirt.

Something like "Dammit Bones - leave the Brick laying to us!"
