Some of he Lannisters are bad. A few become more sympathetic later. That's what makes his books great is the shades of grey with the ant/protagonists. The last episode of this season should be fantastic.

I read the first book, don't think I have the stomach to pick up the next one, while realistic, I can't invest so much into a character just to see him die.

I read the first 2 books and only saw 2 episodes. Not because I didn't want to watch all of the episodes but because I don't have HBO and only see the A Game of Thrones when I travel for business. I will definitely be buying the series on blu-ray when it's released. What I saw was pretty true to the books (although I didn't understand why they changed the things they did). And I agree with what was said previously, don't get attached to characters. George R R Martin is brutal with his characters.
