Sorry, that might not have read the same way as it sounded in my head. I was trying to agree with you over the absurdity of how underpowered the Rogue is.

I mean, the way the game enforces "Rangers must use a crappier weapon in their offhand than their mainhand" is literally "The offhand weapon can be any one-handed Rogue weapon". If that's not insulting, I don't know what is.

Have you played much 2nd ed DnD (if not, I highly recommend Baulder’s Gate). You don’t bring a thief (rogue) for Damage - they hide and avoid combat or stand well away and use a short bow. You bring them to disarm traps and pick locks. It’s not insulting that they are weapon restricted, combat just isn’t their role.

Have you played much D&D after 2e? The role of the thief/rogue has evolved to be burst damage specialist against single targets. They even formalized this in 4e with the Strker role, where Rogue is the classic exmaple:
dnd4.fandom.com/wiki/Role#Striker

Bottom line, though, is that "combat just isn't their role" leads to very not fun situations in a game where ~50% of the experience is combat.

I haven't played 2e DnD, but in True Dungeon combat is a huge part of the Rogue class identity. A class-defining ability printed on the character card is to perform a very large attack during combat, and the majority of Rogue-specific tokens relate directly to attacking during combat. Unlike other classes, there is nothing a Rogue can do during combat other than attacking the monster, and Rogues are given an ability and a great deal of token support to do exactly that.
I play Rogue. Occasionally I even play Rogue well.

Hah, ok, got it.

Yep, really I think people who don't play Rogue need to stop "theory crafting" and "min-maxing" and listen to the people who understand the class. We know what is fun, what's not, what's stressful, etc. We shouldn't be making build choices based on how it effects the 1% of overpowered players with resources in which noone in there right mind will ever get to unless they have been playing for 20+ years or get really lucky with some sweet token draws.

Simple answer for folks feeling a run is too easy. Unequip some tokens.

Maybe not, maybe the intent is for some ranged/spell retribution?
