A set bonus is the equivalent of arguably the best head slot UR for spellcasters.

Is that too much?

Also, since it has to be the first spell one casts, I hope first monsters get a lot tougher, particularly on NM/Epic.

True its powerful but as you point out it's only on the 1st spell so probably not at the most clutch moment. Honestly it will probably just make the first encounter a little more fun for casters who normally hold back their big spells.

It’s also potentially a free 3rd level healing spell.

Do you really think it’s out of line with the charming set bonus? That’s a group of really awesome URs that carries with it an extra level - which is more powerful than any UR effect.

Without slot expanders, the charming set gives the benefit of a cloak of destiny. Pretty much the same, except defensive rather than offensive or healing. So, yes, I do think it is a bit out of line, though I will concede maybe not as much as I initially thought.

This wording is just getting me, UR "Arcane" Set: Wearing all three of these items grants a caster the power to not mark off the first spell that character throws in a game,. Can we change to cast or this only meant for combat spells?

It works out to +3.3 on average, though my intuition tells me that the distribution of the possibilities makes it slightly more useful in combat than the absolute difference indicates, although I haven't really thought about it much.

Yes, one could use wands/scrolls/Staff of Power to save any spells for the final fight...

I was joking - if one goes through all that one might achieve many things - being "too powerful" would not be among them.

Love the change to Grace. It "feels" better.
And to appease Druegar, I will clarify that the mere act of rolling a second die provides visceral and tactile feedback that you are doing something to actively help your party. Admittedly, ~half the time it won't make any difference ("Rolled an 12! Whoops, second roll was a 5.") but the other ~half of the time, it'll make a difference, and feel like you really spent your power well. ("Rolled a 5. WooHoo - second roll was a 12!")

I also really like the change to the Arcane set power. Not only does it feel more "Arcane" but it encourages those shy newbie casters to go ahead and throw some damage/healing around... instead of cautiously rationing their spells and ending up dead before the final room.

I agree it seems too strong at first glance, but after mulling it over all night as a Cleric I don't think people take a ton of damage first round or two of first combat. My first go to in almost all combats is to Bless/Prayer. So now the set reads +1 Prayer use. That is good, but not game breaking, to have Prayer all three combats (instead of bless for one). Hell now I might actually cast Searing Light or Spiritual Hammer first round, since I tend to cast no damage spells at all. I suppose I could just swing my hammer the entire first round and use Cure Serious Wounds at the end to heal like +34 split between two characters.

I don't think it's super OP. Like other's suggested, it gets casters casting spells on the first monster now (albeit the best spell).
