Greetings All, In celebration of my 38th consecutive Gen Con I am working on builds for my first large group run (E3, Hardcore). Having indoctrinated my group of friends into TD over the last couple years, of the group, 7 of us have played. I am throwing my wife and a good friend into the deep end of the pool for this run (neither have played, wife has never even role played before, but this is her 25th Gen Con, she is a fast thinker). I am looking for advice. Any input as to the best Rare (Red) weapons by class. I realize opinions differ greatly. I will be spreading out my Ultra Rares/ Transmutes to benefit the group where I can. This is such an awesome game and community. I feel very grateful to be a part of it. I only wish I had discovered it sooner. Paraphrasing that line from Broke Back Mountain.
True Dungeon, I don't know how to quit you!
Thanks .... Spud

Across the board that any class can use is the +1 Bliss Hammer. 5.5 average damage. It's also still cheap and you can get in bulk, 1 Handed great to use Shields still. There are better Swords for Fighters but I'm just giving you a top line suggestion, I'm sure others will chime in with more detailed options.

+1 War Sling for Range, the only class that cannot use it are Wizards who should be launching spells anyway.

"Best" is definitely a nebulous term. Most of it has to do with what you want to do with that class.

I would submit that you want a barbarian to have a 2 handed melee weapon and a 1 handed ranged, so you can get an armor set bonus going if you'd like.
Fighter, Dwarf fighter, same thing. Probably Paladin as well, though you may want 1 handed.
Cleric and druid I would say Baton of Focus
Wizards, staff of focus
Bard Perhaps the +1Fae Blowgun flute, so they can attack and bardsong
Rogue, depends if you want melee or ranged
Monk, anything FoB compatible, and Shurikens for ranged

In the class sub forums, I have some suggestions for rare builds for each class. Some guides are better than others, but I'm working on improving that.

As Wade said 'best' is relative for a few reasons:

1. Are you optimizing spellcasting or physical attacks for those who can use the rare "of focus" weapons? For Bards would you rather have a +2 damage bardsong instrument, or one that allows them to attack and do bardsong?

2.How do you feel about defense? For most (all?) classes you can get the best hit/damage by stacking STR, however for Bard, Ranger, Rogue their built in DEX makes it close, and by boosting DEX you get AC/Reflex saves as well, and avoid retribution damage.

I usually bias towards maximizing damage, which means pursuing a melee/STR build but giving "of focus" weapons to Cleric, Druid, Wizards, and a +2 bardsong damage instrument for Bard. at rare level.

The spreadsheets listed here have some of the highest damage weapons per class:

For classes that can use two handed weapons, Ring of Brilliance means that 2 handed melee weapons are commonly recommended.

P.S. - I think several of the weapons are 'tied' for best in that there are multiples with the same average damage.

For the Fighters, I would go +1 Drow Blood Sword over the +1 Bliss Heavy Axe. The damage wheels are comparable with min / max, however the fewer number of options on the axe make its damage slightly higher. I'd totally go +1 healing over .6 average damage.

I would use the same logic on the Paladin and Ranger - +1 Drow Blood Mace is a little less damage than Dwarven Battle Axe, but extra HP across the dungeon is preferable to the extra point of damage.

Edit
For the offhand ranged shields on the 2H builds, I would trade the extra 1 or 2 AC for the always on extra save from either a Darkling Shield or a Fae Yew Shield.

I like the +1 Drow Blood weapons myself for rares.

They can take the pressure off the cleric for heals and maybe do some offense themselves.
I'm guessing clerics like to slide weapons also :)
