I noticed there wasn't a new person or introduction thread but wanted to say hello to the community after doing the demo 3 years in a row all at PAX. But this year I finally was able to talk a co-worker in joining this year, so I wouldn't be an awkward solo in a pug and 3/5 completed N3. Although I think the DM in room 7 had pity on us being everyone's first run. Had lots of fun, thanks all that promote TD and brought it down south.

I have been lurking on the forums reading posts and saw the advise of putting into being a volunteer to meet others. *Cross my fingers* Never been to Origins or GenCon.

What class typically is under picked?

Welcome!

I’ve met a lot of cool people through volunteering.

When I first started playing, no one seemed to want to play healers, so I ended up playing Cleric a lot. Not sure what the answer is now among PUGs.

If you want to be flexible, both fighters and Clerics are about two tokens (a blunt weapon and holy symbol) away from each other. Stock up on +STR items. Swap a weapon and armor and you have a barbarian or Druid, and a couple more tweaks and you’re a Ranger. Lose your armor and weapons and you have a monk.

I’d caution against going too heavy into one class too soon. You might want to try a few different classes first. I thought I wanted to be a wizard at first, but ended up Cleric.

Welcome to the forms.

Clerics are always needed, usually someone will do it but it’s a good class to look at. I notice on PUGs of new players Monk isn’t played very often.
When I look at what I want in a pick up group I typically want a wizard, cleric, rogue, and after that everything else just works it’s way out.

Welcome,
I too only play at PAX.
Next year if you are looking to do a round, post it on the forums and people will join.
I did N3 on Friday morning and though we only had 5 people we crushed it.

Also, I second what Wayne said as far as group selection. Cleric and/or Druid are always needed. A Wizard, Monk, or Barbarian is next most important. After those are gone I'm a Dwarf.

Thanks for playing and for posting here. You will meet some great folks on the Forums, and then again in real life at our shows. And volunteering is a great way to meet even more awesome people -- while having a whole bunch of fun.

First of all, WELCOME to the Forums

I love volunteering and I coach new groups every Con. I usually recommend people play what they want rather than worrying about which tokens they got in the starter pack. So play what you like. I recommend connecting with some of the serious collectors that can loan you a decked out build on one their runs before investing in just one particular build. You could be severely disappointed if you get to your coaching room and that character is taken. Check the forums as we get closer to the Cons. Many of us have alternate builds so we can allow newer players to play what they like while still having a good build for ourselves.

I strongly recommend using the app. Someone mentioned how you can retool your tokens fairly easily for fighter types and that can also be done for spell caster types but the app will allow you to create alternate builds so you can see which tokens are usable by which class and optimize your builds with the tokens you have.

Volunteering is definitely a great way to meet lots of wonderful new friends.

After having an issue getting my preferred class a couple of years ago, I've been making every class in the Character Generator that is my set of tokens that I'd use for that class.
That way, I can play any class that is needed by printing out the party card.

I use the spreadsheet, and here is a link to it:

There is also a phone app, so look for "True Dungeon Character Generator" in your app store of choice.

If you do PUGs, this is almost a must.

Bonus: if you present your coach with your tokens AND a printout from Amorgen’s spreadsheet or Cranston’s app (as referenced by LoM above) you get a bonus +1 to your Max HP, plus you save precious minutes in coaching and minimize stress and ulcers for all concerned. There may be other utilities recently or soon-to-be endorsed by TD. You can use non-approved apps, but coaches won’t accept their calculations and you won’t get the extra HP.

I love the app because you can update it on the fly from draws, purchases, and trades at the con. It might be more challenging in Excel, but it’s excellent, too.

The app costs a couple bucks, but the only non-consumable slotless token I can think of that grants +1 HP goes for hundreds of dollars, so I considered it money well spent.

Hello and welcome! I coached N3 at PAX (50% chance I was your coach), and we were counting the unselected class cards in the coaching area.

Paladin and Barbarian were the most played. I saw a lot of wizard cards, and it's nice since you have 2 shots to get one of them. I think it's smart to start with a more general token collection that can fit a lot of needs. If you are JUST starting out and anticipate playing a lot, I'd also look into treasure enhancers (or planning on transmuting the one that's coming out this year).

See you around
