TOPIC: Use of older tokens

Use of older tokens 10 months 2 weeks ago #1

Hi everyone, my wife and I will be doing our first true dungeon this year at gencon. Not sure what to expect or how to prepare. Going through handbook and token guide. Can't seem to find out if previous years tokens can be used this year. Can we purchase older packs or do tokens expire?
Thank you in advance!

Almost all tokens ever produced are still valid. There are a small handful that are no longer useable. Though you can buy current and older tokens. You do get 2 packs each for your adventure at Gen Con so I would not worry about picking up any additional tokens unless you really want to.

Welcome to TD! jedibcg has it right for your first run, I think you'll do great with just you the packs you'll get at the beginnning!

You may want to check out this link: GENCON Runs to see if anyone on your run is trying to pre-organize the run. Some people try, many do not. So don't worry if you don't find your run here.

The most important thing to remember is have fun!

Don't get to worried about tokens beforehand. However, they are a tremendously fun hobby all on there own, so if you enjoy that type of thing, feel free to dip a toe in!

Welcome back, Steve! As long as your tokens aren’t made out of wood, there is only a small, almost negligible chance that your tokens wouldn’t be allowed in the game. I can only think of 3 off the top of my head: older versions of Charm of Avarice, Mad Evoker’s Charm, or Lenses of Divine Sight.

If you did happen to have wooden tokens, my understanding is that they’re no longer equip able and only woodie consumables can be used. In that case, you could very likely find a token collector who would buy or trade them off you.

If you would like to get ahead you can check out the Resources page to find more info on tokens. You can put your build/character sheet into Acherin’s website or Cranston’s app and show it to a coach. They love to see these sheets! I recommend the app because you can update it with new tokens inside coaching without needing internet connection.

Steve wrote: do tokens expire?

There have only been a very small few tokens that truly expire. When they do, the expiration date is printed on the token. E.g., One-Boot Billy's Map specifically says on the token, "Expires 10/1/2024"

Golden Tickets also expire. Even though they don't have a specific expiration day, they are only valid during the year they are printed, which is always printed on the token.

Sometimes a token becomes obsolete due to a limited-time event ( Lore and Truecraft come to mind) or as the result of a rules change. When in doubt, look up the token in question on tokendb.com. The TDb is the ultimate authority on token use. It's free, has no ads, and doesn't use cookies.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

With some exceptions due to game changes or being obsoleted (like Rumor tokens and Scrolls of Light), wooden tokens are usable on runs, they are just as valid for use as chip tokens. Even wooden weapon tokens can be used (except for the 2003/2004 Rare ones without damage wheels) although they won't magnetically stick in the sliders of course. I'm still using my wooden Dragonscale Shield, for example. :)

Not from TD. We only sell current-year token packs. You can buy them on the TD Store page.

Though you may be able to find folks who sell token packs from previous years, that involves a certain amount of risk/trust.

Most wooden tokens are still valid for use. A total of 13 tokens (plus the 40 lore tokens, 15 truecraft tokens, and 4 reserve bars) are no longer valid for use. The 13 left are:
Light scroll and potion of darkvision (rendered obsolete when TD started providing lights to carry around for all players whether you had a torch token or light scroll token or not)
Identify scroll (rendered obsolete by decades old rule change)
Rumor tokens
Earcuff of Inspiration (rendered obsolete by rules change several years ago)
List of all obsolete tokens (as well as info on every token out there) can be found at:
tokendb.com/limited-use/obsolete/

Everything else is good to use! Enjoy your runs!

I was surprised to see the rumor tokens were marked as obsolete. I thought they could still be used. It's interesting the nuggets you find digging through tokendb.

Last thing that should be noted if you are playing Bard's Beard (which I don't think you are based on a different post). You cannot use any additional tokens beyond the ones you are getting for the adventure, so buying any for that would be a waste. If you are playing one of the other adventures then additional tokens are welcome.

I still hope that the rumor tokens are revived at some point, they always seemed very useful. Maybe it could be as simple as the coach in the training room giving some preset clue for the rumor token.
