I’m seeing a boom in the market for virtual escape rooms using tools like Occulus (Occulus has fully self contained options not requiring a PC.)

If they digitally record the puzzles, etc in 3D, they could make a version of True Dungeon that ports to VR gear (like Occulus.) Virtual escape rooms are growing in popularity (one of Occulus’s most popular games is an escape room game “keep talking and nobody explodes.”) Have an off the shelf version that has canned runs as a “teaser” for a few bucks and a premium version where they join “live” dungeons with other live players, live actors, etc.. They could leverage their physical sets as well as actors without changing any mechanics. Token purchases could be done virtually (perhaps with existing token purchases just auto-porting over.) it becomes a revenue generating game model that generates revenue while promoting the game. (Maybe also allowing in app token purchases as well as “skins” for your PC either earned or purchased.)

The costs to build something like this could be handled through this being a spin off company licensing TD IP backed via angel investors, a kickstarter, or both. A premium VR game (excluding ones licensing Marvel, etc) costs $200k-$300k to make. The vast majority of those costs are animations and voice actors. This would just need a UI/UX developer, a network engineer, a short term project based graphic designer, and a short term project based videographer. 3-6 month turn around time wouldn’t be unrealistic. Once done, you just need to market it - fortunately, you already have an existing customer base and venues to promote it. That then leads to it gaining it’s own momentum and becoming a vehicle that promotes the RL game to new audiences.

It is a bit of a tangent from the existing effort you are doing but not by a ton.

Besides the spin off idea I suggested, doing this virtually would allow you to add more sound effects, video, and create elements like “depth.” You could represent being underwater with visual impacts on how we see the run (a blue filter) or use Zoom tools to make the environment more immersive.

This sounds like a lot of fun. I am definitely in for doing the runs!

I'll always be hoping for another brief return to wooden tokens. ;)

This might be an ideal use for augmented reality, especially to keep development costs down. You could start with virtual pucks on a real slider board as phase 1, then move to some virtual set pieces in stage 2 (I’m thinking the rod puzzle from e2(?) last year).

Zoom is an IP based platform. It is the same for everyone no matter where you are (except China where it is censored.) it is just like streaming videos as far as your ISP is concerned.
