TOPIC: Advice for new group

Advice for new group 4 years 8 months ago #1

Hello everyone. I’m super excited to do my first run and I have a group of 9 others all who have never done TD before. We are playing on normal and I have read through the handbook but had a few questions and am looking for any helpful advice!

For the memory classes how long do you have to memorize the beads/leaves/ect?
Is it okay for some players to not have much equipment? I bought 7 bags of tokens already and we have divided them up. Of course we will get more when we get there.
If we make our characters on the website now, can we edit it when we get more tokens by handwriting it? Or will the coach rewrite everything?

Again, any advice would be great. We are doing E2 because it’s what we could get. Does that matter? Will we miss story info from E1?

Thank you!

Welcome! You are more prepared than many new groups, so congratulations!

It’s fine to do E2 without doing E1. The NPCs might mention some stuff “you” did before entering E2–just nod your head and imagine it is true.

In terms of the party card, every coach fills out the official party card. The character creator website is great, but sometimes internet access is spotty in the coaching rooms. You might want to consider having one person in your party get the character app (iPhone or Android). It allows you to make last-minute edits to your character even if you don’t have internet access, and show the coach your up-to-date stats, or even an entire party card (there’s a tab for that). It does cost a few bucks, so another option is to print the party card from the website and just hand-write any last-minute changes on it. But, once the coach is copied down the stats on the official card, it’s not that easy to make further changes, so try to get any upgrade decisions made quickly.

Hope this helps!

Hi Allison, and welcome to the crazy TD world! Sounds like you have a good handle on what to expect. For the memorization, those folks will have a 12 minute time period to study up on their specialties, but there will be a minute or two at the beginning where there will be some basic explanation of how TD works. Tell them to not stress too much, since a failure just means that their spell isn’t quite as effective, it still works!

Your best bet with the tokens is to separate what you have out into character classes, and then use what you gain from your 10 packs to make them better. Your coach and coach assistant will be glad to help you!

It will be fine to run E2 as a stand alone. I haven’t done any runs yet this year, but I understand that they are not meant to lead one into the next.

Enjoy!

Hello and welcome to the forms :)

You will have 12 minutes in the training room after coaching is complete.

For sure, normal difficulty is balanced for players with just their starter bags so if you have anything extra you should be in good shape. Honestly good teamwork and communication are way more important. Time is your biggest enemy in the dungeon in combat rooms slide quickly and move out of the next persons way. In puzzle rooms voice your thoughts, listen to others, and don't get to hung up on any single idea. As a famous signature says, there is no token equal to a good brain (or something like that :)

The coach will re-write everything on to the party card so changes are fine, that said if you have completed stats you will get a bonus hp.

Thank you!

The modules are designed so you can jump in at any point. Small spoilers, E1 is about locating a hidden temple, E2 is about your adventures inside so there really isn't any information you need to carry over. Honestly your in for a treat. Please come back and tell us what you thought after, we can always use fresh feedback :)

I’m the day shift trainer for E2 on Thursday.

I’ll spend a few minutes going over sliding with the melee and ranged combat types, then talk to spell casters and then the rogue.

But a few things to know in advance. Wizards memorize a chart of planes. Clerics learn from he shape of beads. Druids memorize leaves. Bards learn runes for their lore check. The rogue will practice the rogue box Sliders will be practicing during that time.

Some parties set up a sliding order they use throughout the dungeon. Some just wing it. Either way, the key is slide and get out of the way so the next person can go. Casters should talk to the DM while the sliders are going. Time is critical. Be efficient.

Don’t agonize over the skill tests. If you don’t know the answer just guess and move on. Think of success as a bonus.

Other than that, there is a lot of good advise already in earlier posts.
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

I can't speak for every coach, but if you have 7 ten-packs and are about to get 10 more ten-packs when you arrive, I wouldn't worry about using character builders quite yet. There would be too much in flux in your character builds the moment you get your 10 packs.

If your group has pre-selected classes, and arrives early (up to 30 minutes), you will be well ahead of the curve!

Going forward, if you play again with the same group in the future after this, then definitely consider using one of the character generator resources. tdcharactercreator.com/ or the iOS/Android app. TD Character Creator requires internet access for on-the-fly changes while the app does not.

Have fun! Path of Death is an awesome dungeon
Classes Played: Barbarian (65 times), Monk (56), Ranger (33), Rogue (25), Cleric (21), Fighter (13), Druid (12), Paladin (11), Dwarf Fighter (10), Bard (7), Elf Wizard (2), Wizard (2)

Might be late to order for gencon but Trenttokens.com and tdtavern.com have great token folders and carrying cases that are great for organizing your tokens

Thank you everyone! One last question. I know we can only do small or medium backpacks, is there a place to leave stuff while in the dungeon?

There is not one open to the public.

There is a bag check open to TD volunteers and "adventurer guild members." Aventurer Guild membership can be traded with a button/pin for the current year - you can probably get them for $5 or so from a vendor around in the TD area.

I've got an extra one that I'd be happy to give you - I'll plan to to leave it for you at Master Ed's Token Kart (I haven't asked Ed about this, he might say no, and he might not be manning the cart when I am able to drop it off or when your run is).

When is your run?
