TOPIC: Evil outsiders

Evil outsiders 1 week 4 days ago #1

For the purposes of TD, is there a complete list of "evil outsiders" as they pertain to monsters? And, does anyone project that we'll see them in the remaining E series runs? Thx in advance!

I was researching this subject as well. Does TD follow D&D monster manual type rules?

Until the module is released no, even then there is no (that I know of) full list but I'm would not be surprised if someone has compiled one. Most monsters do not make comebacks until many years later, some exceptions do apply (Shambling Mound) and Grind will throw all of that out the window as anything can happen.

If you know D&D monsters well enough then you will be able to identify most fairly easily and it will give you some insight into weaknesses/strengths. I do not want to spoil it for you on Evil Outsiders but any good adventurer should be well prepared for any situation and monster.

Just looking at some of the tokens specific to pallys (Holy Avenger) and deciding if it was better than what I already have. Of course, that depends on whether or not we would face EO's in the upcoming series of dungeons. Obviously, it can be tough to catch small nuances like that. Understandable, given 1 DM vs 10 adventurers and the token text is small and its dark- but I'd need to know if the monster is an EO in order to remind the DM- or have a reasonable enough suspicion to ask.

It’s metagaming to some extent, but situational URs are almost always very useful at least for the year they’re released. It’s a pretty safe bet the Holy Avenger will be awesome for E1-3. As for future modules, it’s anyone’s guess.

While we really don't want to be meta-gaming, this is actually a subject that needs to be addressed with all the specific bane tokens that have been coming out. There needs to be a certain way for the players to know the creature type of the monsters in question. Otherwise there are is a lot of potential damage missed and/or opportunities.

i.e.) I let a friend of mine borrow my Cleric build when he went to Origins. In one of the rooms he came across an enemy that he thought was either an undead or an evil outsider, so he asked the DM if the creature was either. The DM responded that he couldn't tell him the creature's typing, so my friend used his Turn Undead ability (since Charm of Blissward is on my build) and the DM informed him that it does nothing. At the end of the room my friend inquired why his Turn ability didn't work and the DM said that the creature was an evil outsider, not undead; to which my friend responded by pointing out my Charm of the Blissward. The DM just shrugged.

Just ask the dm - td sometimes has to rebrand monsters for what I assume are intellectual property law reasons - it can't hurt to ask and they will know what the module says.

Did your Bard make their Lore check on the monster?

Would you believe - my tokens work even if there is not a bard in the party!

I kind of see what you're saying, so if asking is too much, then telling is fine: "My weapon has special effects on evil outsiders."

But this is something for TPTB to consider:

Monster type information is about to become a feature of an always craftable chase token

It would be good if TPTB would clarify that whether or not a monster is an evil outsider is hidden information or not.

I would view refusing to answer the question of "is this an evil outsider" as worse than refusing to tell what type of damage a player taking - at least with damage the player can control it. I don't think DMs should refuse to activate the powers of the Avenger due to player ignorance.

I personally see no problem with identifying creature types to players. I'd guess the vast majority of True Dungeon players have no idea what types of monsters are evil outsiders (I've been a GURPS and D&D player for decades and I don't know).

It definitely doesn't seem out of bounds on a TD forum thread to discuss specifics of what types of monsters are evil outsiders, or even the general definition of evil outsiders.

"Realistically" the weapon should have the enhanced effect on the monster regardless of whether the player knows the monster's type. A monster's inherent weaknesses are not dependent on the adventurer's knowledge of that weakness; meaning they can still deal more damage if they just happen to use the correct elemental spell or weapon, regardless of whether they "meant" to deal more damage or not.

That being said, the DMs in TD may just not realize what you're trying to do, and they have a lot of things to deal with and remember, so I can see how easy it would be to make a mistake. As a player, I try to be as specific as possible to communicate as clearly as I can with the DM.

Hopefully it's not too annoying to the DMs who are really on top of everything... but I feel like it's mostly on the player to make sure they get to take advantage of all their cool gear and abilities, so that requires the player to be very clear about what they're doing and how they're doing it.
