TOPIC: Noob Questions

Noob Questions 5 years 9 months ago #1

Will be playing TD for the first time at Gen Con. I have questions about the Monk. If the Monk brings weapons (puts them on the token mat at the beginning) does the Monk need to have them equipped for the whole adventure or can the Monk bring the weapons but use empty hands? Does the player tell the DM at the beginning whether the monk is starting equipped with a weapon or with empty hands?

Also, an etiquette question. As a 1st level player, any 3rd level or higher player can choose a class before you. Let's say as a 1st level player you arrive 30 minutes early and select your class and lay out your tokens on the mat. At what point is it considered bad form for a more experienced player to come in and select your class (forcing you to start over with class selection and token layout)? Or should the 1st level player wait for everyone to arrive before selecting a class?

Thanks for any help in advance.

1. All equipment is set for the entire adventure, EXCEPT for weapons. So yes, you can swap them around. No need to tell the DM. Whatever weapons you use are put into the pucks before sliding. You can rearrange your weapons every round, if you want, as a Free Action.

2. I would say, it’s rude if the vet isn’t there by the time on the ticket. Most vets are cool with lots of tokens and multiple builds, so most will use a backup character so the newbie can have the best possible first experience. And if they insist on monk, they’ll usually outfit you with one of their builds to take the burden off of you.

2a. Not saying you’re guaranteed it won’t be a problem, you could run into someone who insists on violating Wheaton’s Law, but odds are in your favor.

1. If there is a change in the to hit and/or to damage from changing weapons, technically he should inform the DM.

Yes, BC, I forgot that. If you’re using a pair of +1 Cestus and switch to bare hands, you should say “I’m -1 to hit now,” or something similar.

There usually isn’t a change to damage, because it’s baked into the damage wheel, but there could be. Last year, switching from an Iron weapon to bare hands would mean you should also say “I’m not using iron fists” or something, because iron made a difference.

But if your weapons have no pluses and nothing special, there’s no reason to say anything.

Always put your best weapons on the mat.

{puts on the Pedant Hat}
All equipment is set for the entire adventure, except for hand-held items. I.e., if you hold it in your hands*, you can swap it in/out during the adventure. Therefore, weapons, shields, and wands are all swappable.

*Not to be confused with worn on the hand--bracelets, gloves, and rings can't be swapped.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

My answer was in the context of Monks, who can’t use wands or shields.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it

Druegar is, as usual, correct

Even if it was limited to monks then your answer would still be incorrect as there are bracers that are weapons for monks but yet they are not hand held. So they should be changeable based on what Druegar just said.... :D

Thanks for all of the answers.

I have another question. The 2018 wands are no longer charge based but limited to 1 use per room. Is a wand treated like a weapon in that you can bring more than one of the same kind? I know you are allowed to switch to a different type of wand and use it but could you bring, say, 5 Wands of Thor's Fame tokens and be able to use them a total of 5 times in the same room?

And a couple more questions:

(1) What character classes are considered easier or harder to master?
(2) Are there character classes that are considered more/less powerful than others?
