TOPIC: Current Year TD Story Cycle Speculation (Spoilers)

Current Year TD Story Cycle Speculation (Spoilers) 6 years 2 weeks ago #1

I'm trying to remember what has been disclosed about our current spot in the storyline, and also curious about what people are speculating the story will bring.

If you read below this line on this thread you may encounter spoilers, either in the form of references to explicit things that TD management has stated, or speculation from players that turns out to be correct.

---

OK!

I am trying to clarify for myself what is up in the story, here is what I recall / believe, and would welcome any clarifications you can provide:

1. We started chasing an Evil Mind Flayer in 2015's Into the Underdark module (this is certain).

2. 2018 will see the conclusion of a multi year story arc, and the creation of a transmuted token for 2016, 17, and 18 adventure years. (I believe Jeff has stated this explicitly in the past).

3. I had thought that the Mind Flayer was itself on a quest to assemble the Teeth of Cavadar artifact, which based on the release schedule of tokens would naturally end in 2021. (I'm reasonably confident of this but may have completely misinterpreted something).

My questions:

Q1. Has 2018 indeed been announced as the end of an arc with a transmuted token to memorialize it?

Q2. Do we know, or have good reason to believe, that we'll face off against a Mind Flayer this year?

Q3. How do you think we'll wrap the current 3 year arc and launch a new one this year across the N1, N2, and N3 modules?

* In particular, if we face off against a Mind Flayer, would you expect it in N1/2/3?

What is driving this for me is I'm not sure I can fit in all 3 adventures at Gen Con, and I'd like to attend whichever one wraps up the Mind Flayer storyline if possible.

Obligatory spoiler warning.....

I believe the multi year token is set to be 4 years of monster bits. Since 2015 was in the Icecrag Earcuff, I believe it will be 2019 before we see a transmute token.

As for the mind flayer (slayer) we may see it. I would purely speculate on N3.

I believe next year is set to be something Infernal, so some of the tokens this year will seem more relevant soon.

I think next year will be the transition year rather than this year.

I think we are due to see the Mind Flayer return. Which dungeon? Your guess is as good as mine. I would probably lean towards N3 just because it's last.
Classes Played: Barbarian (65 times), Monk (56), Ranger (33), Rogue (25), Cleric (21), Fighter (13), Druid (12), Paladin (11), Dwarf Fighter (10), Bard (7), Elf Wizard (2), Wizard (2)

Went looking for this, and found info about the story too. We might not see the Mind Flayer until 2019.

Less details and more yes/no that one should hold on to monster bit sets for combo transmutes or not. Same for completion tokens i'd also say some of us are hanging onto for same rationale.

It is a tradition we will continue in 2019, but you won't be able to make it at Gen Con 2019. It will have to be done via mail or at later Cons.

I am guessing 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 for the monster bits.

I suspect there is a good chance we will see him again this year due to the bead that negates the incorporeal miss as he used that mechanic last time we saw him.

Just to clarify he was not incorporeal as I remember but using the TD version of blink. So the bead would not work against this. I could be remembering incorrectly, and don't have the module in front of me. If someone remembers better or has the module can you clarify this?

Flavor statement: "It feels like the Mind Flayer is reaching into your mind. Its appearance shifts and warps into the surroundings. You're having a hard time discerning exactly where he is - but you sense he's closing in to attack!"

Rules statement:

Psychic blur: Missile attacks and any spell requiring a slide cannot hit the Mind Flayer. Single target spells that don't require a slide or melee attacks can hit but suffer a 50% miss chance. Flip the special coin to determine whether or not the attack succeeds. Multi-target spells automatically hit - no coin flip needed. The distortion caused by the Psychic Blur cannot be purged by any magical effect.

In particular I remember some disappointment that tokendb.com/token/lenses-of-clear-sight/ didn't help you hit the monster, I see no exemption for incorporeal damage (e.g. Force spells and +1 Mithral Long Sword were not mentioned as helping in "tokens of interest."

So, unless the ability has been nerfed I wouldn't expect the beads to help.
