TOPIC: Newbie TD Runner at Gen Con Questions (Timing)

Newbie TD Runner at Gen Con Questions (Timing) 8 years 2 days ago #1

Hello all,
First time TD runner going to Gen Con. Since they have now released the schedule listing I have started making my schedule. I am a bit confused on the timing of the events though. I have seen in several places (including this forum) various times for both showing up for the event and for how long they are.

So my questions are as such:
1. If I wanted to go to a 12:00 pm event, when should I arrive? Does the coach room open for my group at 12:00, or earlier?
2. How long from time given for the start (12:00) until you actually leave TD completely and can go play something else? The listing is 2 hours, but I have seen several people say more like 3.

Thanks for the help!

Hi Alex,

I would suggest arriving 15-30 minutes early. You will be able to get into the coaching room that early. There you can start looking through tokens you received and the available character classes.

You will enter the treasure room at the end time listed (2 hours after the start time). I would allow 15 minutes to get through the treasure room and pull your treasure from the box (sometimes there can be a line for that). This year especially, TD will likely be quite a distance away from your other events. So, for a 12:00 start time (2:00 end time), I would not schedule anything before 2:30.

Hope this helps, and have fun :)
Classes Played: Barbarian (65 times), Monk (56), Ranger (33), Rogue (25), Cleric (21), Fighter (13), Druid (12), Paladin (11), Dwarf Fighter (10), Bard (7), Elf Wizard (2), Wizard (2)

Welcome!

I think you can arrive at your coaching room about a half-hour before the time on the ticket, plus or minus.

The horn blows every 12 minutes, so you get two horns in the coaching room, one in the training room, and one horn in each of seven rooms. That's two hours total.

But, you need a few minutes to pick up your XP voucher and treasure tokens, and it's all the way over in Lucas this year, so I would allow at least 30-60 minutes to get to your next event.

Unless that event is another TD run. Then you could do it back-to-back, especially if you've coordinated your party ahead of time.

Others might disagree. But don't add stress to your con by having a too-tight schedule would be my advice.

Oh, and try to have your character sheet printed out or on a smart device using one of the generators, to lower stress and make your coaches love you.

If you're in a rush, you can draw your treasure anytime during the con, just don't lose your chips.

Good luck!

Official Answers from a Coach Coordinator:
You may enter the coaching room up to 30 minutes prior to the time listed on your ticket. You may hang out in the storyscape area earlier than 30 minutes if you like, but you can't sit down at your table until 30 minutes before.

As others have said, the event is technically exactly 120 minutes long, but giving yourself a buffer is highly recommended.

Here's why you want to have your character's stats pre-calculated using one of the two character generators:
  • Allows you to decide what your character is using in a no-pressure environment.
  • Your coach will love you.
  • Your party will love you.
  • You get a bonus hit point! (This is now official policy.)
The character generators are available for Excel as well as iOS & Android
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

Welcome Alex

That's a great tip. -Basically when you exit the dungeon, there's a room were they review your party card and give out treasure tokens to be used at the treasure box. Last year the treasure box was at the store, so you could go back anytime. Which is great if there was a big line.

Some time before your first TD event, you may enjoy wandering around the storycape, taking in the environment and talking to some of the token venders and other TD players hanging out. Personally I think it adds to the experience. And sometimes there useful information hiding around the storyscape.

As a past coach I highly suggest that as a newbie you show up as close to 30min before your start time as you can.

I agree to allow 15min after to get your treasure draws.

FYI: I am likely putting together a group of newbies (me plus up to 9 first-time players) if I can buy out as many full 10-slot runs as I want to. I wouldn't count on that (so still try to get your own tickets) but if you are interested reach out to me. You can always add it to your schedule after I have secured it and/or return the tickets that you bought if you don't wan to do an extra run. The goal will be to make the first time experience a bit less intimidating and we can do things like pre-plan our character choices. My email is This email address is being protected from spambots. Speaking as someone who went in as a newbie last year to two random groups. I would highly recommend this if possible. While I did enjoy my experience last year, this would have been a godsend.

As a veteran i expect practical timings to shift a bit as we all get used to our new home over at the stadium. How long to move around and back an forth from hotels/food/halls to TD and back in a given time frame.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven
