That was only for Laz's solo run that year. Katrina (Medusa) and I (DM) not only put them on the board to mess with him humorously, but we also tossed them at him while he was sliding. Surprisingly, he slid nothing but 20's.

It may have been a special obstacle for Laz in the main dungeon, but in True Grind at WYC, the medusa had snakes guarding her as part of the module. The object was to spend the first couple slides clearing the snakes from the board, to get your heavy hitters a clean path to the 20.

On higher levels (Nightmare particularly) we didn't just use little snakes - we had a 3 foot long solid rubber snake that basically prevented anyone from getting to the main combat board. Once you did a certain amount of damage to the big snake (50-is points? A lot of heavy hitters one-shotted it) the big snake was removed, and you could slide at the medusa properly. Or the Druid could try to talk to the snake & convince it to leave.... but I don't think anyone did that.

I've heard tell of boards with multiple characters on them before, but in particular this year's drider made me think of a spider swarm.

Have oh.... quite a number of spiders dotting the board, have to squish them individually. Either a small amount of HP or negligible value and require sliding onto each in turn to kill them so the DMs can simply X off a spider. Or likewise wipe away Xs on higher difficulty each turn.

I do like the thought of some more complex boards, taking advantage of possible mechanics where applicable pleases me.

Sadly I didn't get to use them but with the new pucks that were tried out in grind having magnets in them it could add a new feature to the board of magnets to redirect pucks away from critical hits until the field could be turned off.....party wouldn't know about it until they slid the first time and the pucks stopped mid board or were drawn off target.
Fall down......Go boom!

Remind me to keep packing a few Burning Hands scrolls for future years...
