TOPIC: Wait list location

Wait list location 9 years 1 month ago #1

Trolling the boards, hearing comments during the past GENCONs.

Can we have a table for the Wait List? One location so people don't have to roam around looking for someone with the list.

Maybe put a neon sign up with a big arrow... okay some sarcasm but you get the point!

Thoughts?

I would couple that with one person at the wait list desk and another roaming (both connected with radios). Yes, I know it takes an additional volunteer but then people know where to go (wait list desk) and when the desk attendee needs to recruit/locate/recon they can send the roamer.

I'm awed at how Shelly and the other waitlist volunteers actively keep on top/work on it without loosing hair. My issue is that the waitlist as currently is based out of checkin desk which obviously changes location year to year. Think the only real consistent fix for year to year is to put that person on the radio net and have them roam the open area and have a sign at checkin desk stating people interested in waitlist please sign in here.

Wonder between this and talk of adding assistant coaches to radio net is a) is it going to happen and b) can it really happen. Would seem to me knowing nothing about the higher echelons we almost need a secondary net for the coach and waitlist staff.

the wait list should have a desk right as you walk in the door...not towards the back where new players have no idea where to go....each year TD gets better so hopefully it can get moved closer to the front

Agree, think based on this year's layout having either next to or coexist with volunteer check in might've worked. Somewhere that is towards the front and advertized (ie highly visible sign). In that case a radio becomes essential.

Agreed!

Does anybody have any info on how many slots could have been filled by somebody from the wait list but wasn't? For all I know they are all filled, but if not that is definitely lost revenue for TD, one extra volunteer would help.

I know for sure six from wait list was picked up.

As for revenue lost, if a ticket does not get turned into TD and not give a refund does TD still get credit? (even though GENCON gets a huge chuck of the ticket).

I run events at gencon as well.

Here is an excerpt from the post con email event organizers receive.

All events must have some sort of reported attendance. If they were ticketed (even if free), then tickets must be turned in for them or they didn't happen. If they were not ticketed (because they were a tournament round or similar), attendance still needs to be reported so we can properly track table usage.

To reiterate: If we do not have an attendance report for your event, it did not happen and you were not there to run it

If a ticket does not get turned in, TD receives nothing.

Even if the player paid $52 for the ticket, and doesn't ask for a refund, TD gets nothing without the physical ticket. GenCon keeps it all.

I understand that desire, but since wait list personnel need to communicate with both the admin staff and players in coaching rooms, having them stationed near the coaching area is rather practical. That said, I would favor some way of easily locating the folks running the wait list. Off the top of my head, I might suggest a dedicated table in the "Inn" (aka admin/coaching area) and/or a special hat or flag worn/carried by that volunteer. the purpose being it wold make them easily identified from a distance.
Have you looked it up in the TDb?

Re: Wait list location 9 years 1 month ago #12

It almost sounds like the wait list should have a good placement location, and that TD should have a floater / greater volunteer to help guide new folks to their rooms, to the wait list location, remind folks to hurry along if they're running behind schedule, and to help someone who needs it. When you think about morning, afternoon, and evening shifts for 3 days, and a morning shift for a fourth day, it could be expensive for what comes up being essentially a "helper" spot, but getting all of those spots sold sound beneficial for TD too.

On a side note, having a ticket kiosk closer than the magic hall to purchase $52 of generic tickets might be useful too for non-full runs.
