Re: Elevator Puzzle 8 years 8 months ago #13

I'm curious as to what the "best" solution was, as obviously there were a few options.

On the GT run we each covered a couple of runes and one person in the middle who relayed the crystal from one person to then next. We would have made it on the second attempt if the crystal hadn't been dropped (downside to this technique).

On the next time through it the person who had the crystal would run it to the next person who had their hand up and would call out their number. This also worked well, arguably better.

On the Green w/ Envy run, our Bard personally ran it to every hole, we just put our hands up, called out the number, and pointed to the correct spot.

They all seemed to work. One big key was to practice it once or twice before attempting it, to avoid damage.

I liked both the elevator and orb rooms. Honestly, I thought nearly all of the rooms were great this year (again ignoring the mushrooms which we couldn't hear/use and the mindflayer which felt too random). I also second the comments that the moving wall effect was badass.

The grub room was frustrating because our bard didn't do his lore check, which kind of sucks for us, but that's not TD's fault.

Overall, I thought both combat dungeons were generally well thought-out and fun times. As always, I'm appreciative of the effort, thought and time that goes into putting TD on.

But having to coordinate physically linked actions doesn't work so well when you have a party made of many different physical characteristics and capabilities.

We had a 10 year old in our group for sable gauntlet x.x

Elevator was great though, I did the running both times I ventured through the dungeon. I'm just glad we finished fast so i could rest and take a swig of water.

We had a mom carrying a 6 month old... she did great!

Have you looked it up in the TDb ?
Please post TDb corrections in this thread .

I hope the baby wasn't crying or making a ruckus! And that the rest of the party was okay with a 6-month-old on the run.

On that note, as a DM I saw some really young kids, probably as young as 8yo. It seems strange to have an age policy that is regularly ignored.

In one case the girl said it was her second year of TD and she was well-behaved and stuck close to her mom.

In the other case the boy was a little more wild and had lots of questions. Normal for a little boy though.

In both cases I wonder if everybody in the party was OK with the kids being there. But I was in room 5 so I wasn't going to interfere at that point.

I honestly had mixed reactions to it. The child and father were in the room pretty late so was hard to plan to adapt. A physical puzzle like the chained up orb puzzle was definitely more complex, and though I could not say for certain, I'm sure the father at best had to split his attention between the child and the dungeon.

I don't think we solved a single puzzle that run =/ It was also hard to flow combat well as the child had a tendency to not step away from board when done.

Major props to the Drow in Sable 6 though who really worked to engage the child.
~Meta: Don't worry, it is perfectly "safe" to follow the drunken dwarf into the dungeon!

We had each person stand in an area and man 2 or 3 symbols. Each person remembered their number(s) they were in charge of. So when each person was done they would call out the next number, the person who's number that was would say "here" and the current holder would take it to the next person.

We failed the first time before we decided to "man our stations" and were just kinda running the thing all over the room. Once we did it the above mentioned way we were done with 5 seconds left to spare

So were you on that run that passed through my combat room with the boy? Sorry I can't remember who passed through when...

The father told me that the previous DM rushed his child a lot. I tried not to, and he said I did better, but again it is tough because the kid was trying to do things like slide with an ammunition token in his puck instead of a weapon.

I just would have let him slide the ammo and assign a reasonable, "average" damage for his class and difficulty level.

Yeah, I would have too, but he was actually asking me how to do it, with the ammo loaded into the slider, before he slid. So I felt it best to be straight with him, even though I wanted to make sure it didn't burn a lot of time... :(

I didn't have any come through my coaching room or I would have radio'd.

I see many sides to the child story and spent a lot of time talking to a father(outside of TD) who wanted to go with his son, on the subject.
Sweet a combat room, we won't take damage!
