However the fact that it's technically possible is the reason for a second level of check with the wristband distribution. Essentially double checking to keep TD the ability to buy out entire runs as we currently have access

I did notice that I could buy more tickets to one TD event than I could to any other event but I didn't know it was specially negotiated by True Dungeon. I certainly wouldn't want to make any chances that might jeopardize that very nice feature...

Thanks for the clarification, Jeff. I do think that a clearly posted policy would help, but the room should be checked to see if any players who are there have the extra tickets and want to get ghost wristbands.

That does seem to be the prevalent suggestion

Yes. This.

(And to those who have pointed out that the players can always go to the desk at the 16-minute mark to turn in tickets for ghost bands... true, but sometime the hostess doesn't leave things to the very last moment. Both times, we had our Waitlist replacements appear before the 15-minute mark. Human beings are not always perfectly on time, and some Hostesses err on the side of giving newbies extra time in the Coaching room.)

I would also say, if there's one person in your group who is consistently late to the coaching room, then THEY are creating a problem and expecting TD and everyone else to accommodate them. If they sometimes get bitten, then I can't feel sorry for them and they need to accept responsibility for the situation they created. And if you sometimes get bitten, then you need to confront them and not shift the blame onto someone else who did their best, as far as they knew, to deal with what should be a very rare situation.

But for those who are truly unavoidably delayed, I agree a fair, published policy should be posted for all to see so we don't see repeats of "No-show? Here's 7 packs and a wristband."

Given the amount of discussion on the topic, it doesn't feel like we're talking about the one-in-a-thousand emergency or legitimate reason situation. It feels like we're talking about protecting a number of people from their own irresponsibility and/or poor planning, for the most part. And most of them seem to be experienced players, which makes it all the more unfathomable.

It reminds me of the discussions we've had on harassment in the dungeon. People say "I didn't mean anything" and their friends say "that's just how he is" and so they never change their bad behavior, even though it affects everyone around them, because they and everyone they know makes excuses for them.

But like I said before, I have my own baggage on the topic of the chronically late.

And TD should be able to rely upon the guards at the entrance to do the badge-inspection. If TD has to do their job for them, who needs them? Part of the rent goes towards their salaries, so Jeff should get a partial refund. :)

with that, I'll just stop reading this thread... TPTB are aware and will fix it.

I guess their job is to make sure you can't even glimpse TD without a badge?

In 2013 my father-in-law drove down from Chicago and we walked around the halls a bit and he wanted to check out inside without a badge and no-go. I offered to leave my badge with the guy to make sure we'd be out in less than 30 seconds... I guess the rules are the rules but it seemed like he could have had a glimpse without bankrupting GenCon... But I guess if everybody did it then lots of people might not buy badges?

There have always been issues with people trying to experience Gen Con with no badge. Security for the exhibit hall was not always so stringent and I have also known groups of people to short a badge or two, walk in with a group and then have one person walk out with extra badges to get additional people inside. Normally the worst that happens is them getting kicked out and just having to do it again later. They try to make it as difficult as possible for people to do things like this.

When GenCon was smaller, there were only about three security checkpoints in the convention center. For practical purposes the only area accessible with out a badge was the registration area. Now, with the checkpoints at the hall entrances, visitors can actually see quite a bit more without a badge. The costume parade and zombie walk for example.

You're not allowed to step foot in the dealer's hall to spend money without a badge, I don't see why TD would be treated any different.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

True Druegar. Fair is fair and it should be a level playing field.

They say that the best weapon is the one you never have to use. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to use once! Oh - and if you really need to think about whether you're going to use the fireball or the + umpty staff of butt-whooping - you're likely to find yourself full of arrows, or fangs, or nasty knives & swords and such. Don't think - just shoot!
