It'll all depend on how many people agree to volunteer full time. And then again, you have to do some overlap to cover for the people that don't show up. Anyone know how many no-shows we had this year?

Unfortunately, some positions work better with only full-timers in them. But if we had enough, I'm sure it'd be easier to give people longer breaks.

[Spit take...]

We did not have enough volunteers to cover all the shifts last year -- and that was with us handing out all the badges we were alotted. I think it would be a good goal for 2008 just to get all the positions "manned" during the event. Many volunteers worked 3 (or even 4) shifts every day just to cover the slots that MUST be done. This really has nothing to do with a volunteer scheduler...this has everything to do with adjusting priorities to do the most good. I really wish we could do this too -- but the only way to do it would be to drastically change the event. Unless we kill the Tavern or go to one dungeon. I can't see how it would be possible.

But who knows...anything is possible.

I think the key is more part-time volunteers...if that is possible. (training and all that of course is a HUGE issue.)

I noticed TD solicited pretty heavy at the Exit table...did we get some fresh blood?

Seems to me that if the full-timers are shifting to part-time due to missing out on CON or other gaming events...we are going to be at some risk to lose quality folks running the event.

Granted I don't know all the circumstances behind how many VOLS we get or even need - but it sure seems to me we could give those Full-timers that do both build and tear-down AND want a one shift day, a chance to enjoy the con - or go on a TD event when they are not coming off 8 hours of work.

Not a gripe - just looking to keep quality up and keep those that are missing the CON happy - if that is even possible. I really appreciated the year before last when we had one - one shift day...it made a HUGE difference in how I felt both physically and mentally about volunteering. This year the mental breaks were great - don't get me wrong, it was just far too brief and rushed IMO. Lunch with Sis and an hour or two at the con...that was it for each day - and doing TD runs each night after a shift...

Would it be helpful for someone to Volunteer but not take a part-time volunteers badge?

I don't mind as long as those of us that don't do much besides TD are still able to work the 2 shifts a day if we want. If it was not for TD I would not have even bothered with gen con the last couple of years.

And for me I don't do anything else at GenCon - but walk the floor and have lunch with Sis!

The thing this past year was I had maybe an hour or so each day after taking a lunch. So I feel I missed out on seeing the CON.

Now I imagine those that do like to do other events can't even come close to full-time VOL hours...

But I'm just thinking of those who might enjoy the VOL experience more with one easy day.

I worked the 2nd and 4th shift this year and I liked it a lot better. I didn't have to rush to get up and my last shift started after most stuff was was done for the day.

Are you planning on buying a badge? I think all the volunteers have to have badges. I was thinking of offering not to take a badge cause I really don't do GenCon. I like to go to the dealers room, but that's it, and I can borrow a badge to do that. But to be in the dungeon even as a volunteer you have to have a badge.
You must have a badge to volunteer. And technically, it is supposed to be displayed all the time while in the dungeon, and this has caused a little difficulty with NPC characters in the past. But we have gotten a little understanding from GenCon with their displaying of said badge, but they still have to have one.

Yes, I was thinking about buying my badge. There are GenCon rules on what a full time and part time volunteer must do (in terms of hours). And True Dungeon has a limited number of badges.

If buy my own badge, I can still help with setup and tear down, work some shifts in the tavern and not worry about GenCon rules. That would free up my volunteer badge for another volunteer.

I wanted to let TPTB that I was scheduled for full time but because of last minute communication issues was available but not scheduled officially all that much so I helped set up and then my shift and helped Chris have a great time running through her first run but I wonder if a better floater system could be put in place.
I would be happy to help fill in or especially DM cause I really enjoyed that last year but understand that decisions are made beyond our control.
