Welcome to the True Dungeon Forums Darren.

You can certainly form a group here as there are lots of people that are in your same situation. It might not happen until we are closer to either the convention or around ticket buying time.

If you have any questions feel free to ask, there are tons of opinions here. Sorting through them might be your only problem

Lots of people on the forums are huge token buyers but please don't think you have to buy a ton of tokens to have fun. While I have a lot of the high end tokens today when I first started I had a mere handful. That first dungeon was massively fun even though the best I had was a +1 mace.
You can't fix stupid but you can TPK it.

A lot of people outfit their entire group with tokens as well to help newer players out on their first run, but the tokens don't make the run. My favorite run last year was one where the entire group was geared up with only the tokens you get for entering the dungeon.

Welcome Darren.

I hope you & your hardy crew enjoy True Dungeon once you get a taste of it. It's an experience like no other.

If you have a crew of 4, there's a few different ways you can "round out" your group.

One is to wait for event registration day and buy 4 tickets, and wait to see who else has the other 6 tickets (to the 10-man event). Sometimes players register, and then come to the forums to find the rest of the people in their slot, so they can arrange classes, talk about gear, etc. Sometimes they don't, and the first time you meet your party is 2 mins before the run. You never know what you'll get, but if you are flexible, this is probably the easiest way.

A popular way to assemble a team of 10 is to buy a whole slot of tickets, and then talk to people on the forums to fill the other tickets. This is hard to do, with how fast TD sells out (and a little expensive up front since you have to pay for the full run and wait for others to pay you back), but it gives you the best control over your party!

Another common way of assembling group is the inverse of the method above. Hang out on the forums and find a group which is planning to buy a full slot of tickets (or who has already bought tickets!) and join them. You have slightly less flex room for classes this way (since the ticket buyer usually gets first choice, and/or has friends who dibs certain classes) but this is a great way to meet established players, and 90% of the time you'll find experienced players who can help you out in the token department, if you want to gear up for (Bug)bear. (Thanks, cd!)

I'll repeat what others have said about tokens: The forums are skewed to a discussion of these addictive little chips, but they are not essential for a fun game. (They're just a diversion to keep us occupied during the 11 months of the year which aren't August.)

Welcome. My wife and I were first time players last year, and will be back for more. There are many good veterans here on the forum that are more than happy to help us newbies. Like posted above if you have any questions just ask. I had a ton of em last year before our first run.

Definitely listen to Raven's advice on the runs... she knows what she's talking about.

Depending on time slots and availability my wife and I would be more than happy to run with you. One of our most entertaining runs we had last year was a group that consisted entirely of newbies... we were the veterans with 2 runs under our belt.

If you haven't managed to hook up with a group on the forums before the tickets go on sale, I'd recommend picking up one (or more) sets of 4 tickets in a slot so that you are guaranteed a run. Also, keep in mind that even if you coordinate being on a run with someone before tickets go on sale, someone has to successfully get those tickets in order for the run to happen. I suspect based on how many people were looking for hotels that the True Dungeon tickets might sell out a LOT faster this year than last year.

Another option, as a fall-back, is to get generic tickets and get in a wait line at True Dungeon for when people don't show up for their runs.

Easiest way, as Raven says, is just buy four tickets and don't stress out too much about it.

I'd suggest being flexible with classes the first time around. It's ok to have a preferred one, but don't go in with your hearts set on anything in particular. It's not super-important when you're new. I thought I wanted to be wizard, for instance, but found that I'm more of a cleric.

Last year was our first year, and we jumped in a group here on the forums. They were super helpful, but it was a bit overwhelming with all the tokens being thrown around. One tip though, if they need you to play a bard, not everyone in the party thinks its funny that you are singing the Growing Pains theme song as your bard song ;)

Of course, that's *precisely* what I mean to say. Thanks cdsmith!

Darren,

I run a TD guild Rage of Dragons. We have a Armory cache for new players and also a guild designed "training course" for our new people and others looking to have fun.

PM me if you are interested and we can work out details. I'll be at GenCon this year as will my guild officers.

Everyone on this forum is typically helpful and really good to work with. Raven and other are some people I met through TD that I am glad to call friends from here. Hopefully you and your group will have the same experience.
