Don't forget the possibity of food poisoning if you also ate. Not saying that's what it was.

The testing at the hospital made it very clear that it was a drug that was put in his drink. As the hospital put it, it reduced his breathing to a "non-life sustaining manner" and he wasn't able to keep his airways clear. He would have died if he hadn't gotten a breathing tube within a very short period of time. And the police confirmed there were other similar incidents. I'm sure that some people might have gotten food poisoning, but that's not what it was in this case. Hopefully they will be able to track down the responsible person or persons.

Wow.

Do you know what location he was at? Was this also at the Cosplay Deviants party?

Who would attempt to kill people at a gaming convention? WTF is wrong with people.

Yes...Thank you Jeff, Fritz, and ALLLL the Volunteers this was the best year yet. I was especially impressed with the new ending room a 1002% better experience from last year. The dungeons were all well designed and enjoyable and challenging. This was also the best year for volunteer interaction, of all the volunteers I interacted with (except 1) were really great and knew and did there jobs well. I wish I could remember all the names but here's a few Idid remember Dave and Don (coach and training on Sunday), Dennis (Flight combat on Thursday), both Medusa's (Friday and Sunday), Eric and Tim (Grind), and really so many more. And how about that Sand Beast that thing was awesome!!! I just wanted to stand there and stare at it.

As to what happened to Mike's friend, how terrible. As someone mentioned queue the GENCON is getting too big discussion. My group talked about how we will now likely eat 2 meals in our rooms; we always eat breakfast in the room. But it was so difficult to get food timely; the food trucks were always jammed, most of the restaurants had long waits. The 2 exceptions were Ruths Chris Steak Break which was excellent and quick and Chik-a-fil at the mall food court (they don't have a slow mode). Additionally, we decided before we try to go to a sit down restaurant we must have a 3 hour window. We had a particularly bad experience at Johnny Rockets.

Overall, despite the crowds it was an awesome GENCON and the best TD yet!

One thing to note as an Indy local, the issue is that people tend to hit everything within a block or 2 from the con. A 10 minute walk to the con is Mass Ave which hits at least 10 additional places to eat. Toss in Fountain Square which is a short cab ride and you have plenty of options.

I passed on the food trucks and did Mass ave or one of the sandwich places on Ohio ( a couple blocks north)

Maybe he should take it as a compliment. You don't usually hear of guys getting roofied and at a gaming convention no less. *

* STOP. Hello. My name is Henry and I play the character of henwy. In tonight's episode we dealt with a very serious issue, that of roofies, also known as 'the date rape drug'. Now I want you to know that this entertainment we provide to you each week is fiction and by no means are we, the actors, or our parent company condoning or espousing the use of such substances, especially placed into the beverages of others without their knowledge. Now, surely no rational, real-life human being would read such entertainment and come to the delusional belief that such actions are somehow okay, but we have crazy letter writers and people with large signs marching around the building so let me instead address the hypothetical brain sick you of their imaginings. By no means should you roofie people. It's illegal. It's wrong. And drugs are bad, mm-kay? Even if you were one of those criminally bent, sociopaths (for whom we at this network accept no responsibility for your fucktard behavior), you should _certainly_ not roofie guys at gaming conventions. This is the equivalent of bring a nuclear warhead to go fishing. The average male attendee of a gaming convention would be more than happy to go with you back to your hotel room for a night of sweaty, depraved, furry sex. Even if for some inexplicable reason the first one isn't, there are 50 more just like him and chances are they're even more desperate. There is absolutely no need to use drugs of any sort, except perhaps the use of alcohol to calm the hyperventilation once they realize you're propositioning them. Besides, if you misjudge the dosing you could seriously injure the person or at least cause them to fall unconscious which would foil your plan unless you just happened to have a wheelbarrel and a couple of sherpas with you. In short, DON'T USE ROOFIES. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

Although I appreciate the irony of turning it around to say a Guy should take this as a compliment (since many women are told to take Sexual Assault as a compliment), I object STRONGLY to the implication that any assault of this nature should be viewed in a positive light.

It does a disservice to the victim of this assault, and any similar assault.

Beyond that, it feeds into a cultural attitude that date-rape is a joke.

Henwy, I give you credit for being smart enough to realize that there's a huge difference between joking about assault and actually doing it. Myself, I am able to see this for a joke, and don't believe you would ever do it. But what if some jerk reading this forum isn't quite so bright, or if some entitled git reads it, and thinks, "Ahahaha... that's so funny. See? I'm not the only one who thinks being roofied should be taken as a compliment!" and it makes him or her feel that this form of assault is somehow acceptable, or even funny...?

That's just not cool.

Don't feed that fire.

Mike,
I'm glad to hear that your friend is okay. That's a horrible thing to have happened to him. I hope they catch whoever is responsible for it. Did the bar have any sort of camera system that might have caught something?

Hi Kim,

Thanks, I'm really glad he's OK also. I'm not sure if there was surveillance video, my friend did notify the police so hopefully they will eventually track down person(s) responsible.

Raven, thanks for your email. Having nearly lost one of my best friends because someone poisoned him, it is certainly not a joking matter.

Mike

When reading the story of Mike's friend, one question that ran through my head is how his drink got roofied.

Not having been there, I can't say whether it was a:

A. Restaurant environment
B. Bar environment
C. Dance / Night club environment

each of which have varying opportunities for things to get slipped into drinks.

And without getting into the issue of "blame" (victims should not get blamed), it would also be interesting to know how diligent or careful the roofied individuals were with their drinks.

As Henwy noted, women are disproportionately the targets of drugged drinks. But as a result, women are often more careful.

I think these occurrences, combined with other recent incidents, simply underscore the fact that the nature/environment of GenCon and True Dungeon has changed, and it would be prudent for *everyone* to be more careful in the future. :(
