I've been a little disturbed by some of the information I've gotten through the rumor mill about this past gencon and some of the thefts that have gone on. I've now heard of two events during the various GT runs where persons unknown apparently ran off with tokens and other rewards that were meant for other players. I always knew that we'd lose some of the tight community feeling as the event got larger but I'm not sure I ever figured it'd devolve into outright theft. It only makes it worse that it was during the GT runs where the only people present really should have known better than the average player.

Now, this isn't some ridiculous plea for any guilty parties to engage in a come to Jesus moment and repent their sins. Surely none of us are naive enough for that sort of crap. More it's sort of a dirge for years gone by and a suggestion that people just have to be more careful. The whole token thing has gotten way more mercenary than it ever was in the past and the community isn't as close as it used to be. Whether it's counterfeiting or outright theft, it's something to be aware of.

I am hoping for a registry of the amulets that were given out so we can try and keep the bad seeds from profiting. The counterfeit Treasure Chips are a huge concern, and may mean we don't seem them as a pre-order reward again.

There will always be a small % of people that will do things like this, but if we all remain vigilant, maybe we can make them think twice.

On a positive note....Anyone who heard about my friend Richard and his missing token case will be relieved to know that someone did turn it into VIG lost and found in the end. How exactly the case got there in the end is a bit garbled and nonsensical, but all's well that ends well.

I agree a registry of the GT items seems like an easy fix. Problem is gonna be getting all 39 people to register as all were not forum regulars. It was my first GT run and as fun as it was I was really disappointed that it ended with something like this. Maybe we should start a registry post and start getting the ball rolling.

Okay, since I'm already putting together an unofficial registry for completed Rods, here's something rudimentary for the GT amulets:

It really bothered me walking into that post-GT room and only seeing 18 amulets on the table. I've been lucky enough to get a GT these last two years and thought it was a wonderful experience. I really can't believe that there are people that don't feel the same way and could do things like this, basically spoiling it for others.

I was in the 2013 run that only had six people in it. Those other four swag bags were still on the tables when we left for the run. Temped or not, no one tried to leave with something they knew wasn't theirs. It's nice to know that there are still honest people out there...

How do we solve the problem? There was way more than twenty people in that room with Jeff at the end of the run. I have no idea who they were since I only recognized the nine I ran with. Maybe some way to identify the GT runners that is super-visible. The pin from 2013 was cool, but that might not be that visible, and it could still get you into another runs final room if not handled all at the same time. Who knows. It's worth thinking about.

The legit players were wearing wristbands, but no one thought to check them.

And sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. I consider myself schooled. Thanks Brad! This would be an easy check especially if they continue holding the GT run before any other runs...

The wristbands ID check works... but it won't help if it was a GT runner who took the missing items. Would not have been hard to take a second helping while everyone's back was turned, as people were filtering out of the room.

Im sorry to hear people stole stuff from a GT run. I ran into a similar occurrence. I carry a bag into the dungeon with my groups token's in it, put the bag down on one of the pedestals by the picture taking area. Dropped some tokens turned around to pick them up while people were walking past, when I turned back to my bag one of my build bags. (I separate bags for different builds ) Had been taken since it was sitting in plain view in the open bag. Someone got away with my fighter build. mostly rares but had a girdle of hill giant strength in there. I never worried about theft in the past years but it seems I am going to have to now.

At the least what we can do is make sure that whoever took the amulets won't profit from it. Hopefully, Jeff will be able to release info on what all the various amulets did and through process of elimination we'll find out which 2 went missing. I imagine if it was someone on the GT run who took them...chances are good the 'power' will be sucky. For all we know, someone snapped up a second because they didn't like what the first offered. Still, if we have a list of who was supposed to have what...we at least make sure that the stolen one can't enter circulation somehow through sale or trade without everyone knowing its providence.

There's nothing that can be done about the bag of GT tokens that was swiped since there's nothing to identify them from any other bag full of those tokens. All we can do there is try to be more vigillant in the future. HOnestly, this was pretty much inevitable given the quick expansion of the event and how much money is involved. I mean, how many of us have heard stories about how much thievery goes on at magic tournaments or know someone who had a play deck stolen? We just have to acknowledge that we're not in mayberry anymore and perhaps spend some extra time/effort looking out for one another.
