TOPIC: Input needed for Player's Guide updates

Re: Input needed for Player's Guide updates 5 years 5 months ago #25

I think it's the unfortunately named Boots of Free Action which made "Free Movement" synonymous with "Free Action."

And I agree - I prefer "Free Action" to mean "an action which doesn't cost a round of combat."

Kirk Bauer wrote: IMO, most gamers who spend almost $50 on an event can use Google to find the guide, but I definitely think it should be in the post-registration email.

But they have no reason to search for the Player's Guide if they don't even know it exists. So the post-reg email would be good, yes.

I know I'd like to get a hard copy or 2 to show my new players this year before they go into the dungeon.

Hard copies were available last year at the True Dungeon store for $10 each. I think it'd be great to have hard copies on hand within the prep rooms for consultation too, but I suspect such copies would tend to walk...

I didn't know that, must've stared at them on the wall and never realized they were for sale. Likely be my first purchase of the con then this year.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

going through the players guide, the chart on page 33 for xp benefits lists the following for 3rd level:

"Player is allowed to pick his character before players of lower level."

Maybe that should be changed to "players below 3rd level."

I think that may be the source of the thought

6th level picks
5th level picks
4th level picks
3rd level picks
everyone else picks

The PG also needs a section on scrolls. How they work, and what is required. The information is currently spread out and disjointed.

A section on the Tokendb.com would be welcome as well. How it works in relation to tokens, and rulings. Noting it is the final word on token discussions would be good too.

I'd prefer we used "minor action" or something similar instead of "free action," although that horse left the barn a long time ago. "Free" makes it sound like you can do as many as you like, so saying "you can have one free action per turn" sounds like an oxymoron.

Shelly used to sell chocolate, and she'd put out a bowl with "free samples," and some morons would take fistfuls instead of one or two. "The sign says they're free, so I can have as many as I like," was how they behaved, and some of them even said it to her face. But it was hard to argue with them, that is what it said. She wrote, "one per person" on the sign and started just putting out a few at a time so the selfish people were forced to comply with her intent, even if they refused to read the part of the sign they didn't like.

Not that that has anything to do with anything. Where was I? Oh, yeah, "minor," since "substandard action" is too long.

In the Spell Supplement, the wording for Turn Undead is kind of self-contradictory (emphasis added):
Turn Undead – (once per encounter/room) The Cleric may cast this spell to invoke holy energy directed against all undead targets in the room. Yielding 5 (9) or 8 (12) points of damage, to invoke this holy energy to be directed against one target the caster must prove their Faith.
Since it's supposed to equally effect all undead in the room, perhaps the following would work:
Turn Undead – (once per encounter/room) The Cleric may cast this spell to invoke holy energy directed against all undead targets in the room. Yielding 5 (9) or 8 (12) points of damage, to invoke this holy energy the caster must prove their Faith.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?
Please post TDb corrections/suggestions in this thread .

To All,
Thank you, there are some very good suggestions here. Some are covered in other guides so I struggle with how much information to put in the player's guide (especially w/r to things related to tokens) where they may be covered in other guides or materials.

While I know the game has evolved and become more complicated, I try, probably in vain, to hold on to the premise that the original game was ment to be played (and run) without manuals of any kind, so when we get into discussions about tables and min/max stats, I confess I cringe a little.

I will do what I can to make some changes and additions to the current guide. I am not sure how much of a huge overhaul we will do this year, but if necessary, we may try a more prolonged overhaul after this season.

Thank you again, and keep the suggestions coming, it is because of input from passionate players that the event is as good as it is.

Thank you, I have been entirely swamped with work and the other things in life that take us away from gaming. But am looking forward to time away for Gencon in just a few short weeks.

I have a question about Damage Reduction which I can't find in the Player's Guide and therefore I think it should be in there.

If you have Damage Reduction (e.g. Silverweave Shirt, -1 damage from melee attacks), does the DM handle that or do you handle it? I'm assuming you handle it since I don't see it on the party card. If you handle it, do you need to let the DM know or should you simply make the proper alterations?

I suppose the same question applies to damage immunity.
