I believe we wee on NM last year, and 9 of the 10 of us died..... also lost quite a few limbs to the bunny.

My group beat NM Grind last year, but 9/10 of us died. My wizard was the last to die, right before the last attack killed the bunny. Wish I had remembered my savior stone!

Yes, you choose your level, with one exception: Grind doesn't have a "Non-Lethal" mode.

If you know what you're doing and are reasonably well equipped, most players survive Normal mode. (This is where the "2nd level" requirement really comes in. If you've never played TD before, or have 10 or less tokens, you probably won't survive even on Normal)

If you are purpled out, and/or have good teamwork, you should survive Hardcore (there may be some death, but nothing a Potion of Death's Door or Elixir of Life can't solve).

Nightmare is as advertised: a Nightmare. Even fully equipped groups with good teamwork should expect to suffer some losses. The ones which beat the Grind on Nightmare rarely do so with all 10 members alive at the end.

I have never had a group beat Nightmare without 3 or more deaths.

Lots of good reasons here. I'll just chime in and repeat a few.

1. Its another TD thing to do.
We only get to play this once a year so make the most of it.

2. Combat. Many folks love combat and this is pure.

3. Quality. Combat DM is in my opinion the hardest job out there to do correctly and Grind nails it. The quality of the content is top notch as well.
Sweet a combat room, we won't take damage!
