Bring a flashlight for when the inevetible weapon token goes flying off the board. Searching for them with the provided lights is next to impossible.

You know that "blue tack" stuff for putting up posters on the wall without nails? Bring a glob of that and stick your token in the puck with it, and peel it off when you're done.

My favored class is cleric. My personal preference is for players to tell me "down X from Y" where X is there current HPs and Y is their max. Both are down 5 HP, but I will put a wizard who is down 5 from 10 higher on the triage list than a barbarian who is down 5 from 30.

mec2973 wrote: Don't touch anything! Check with others first.

I would modify that slightly to say, "Don't touch anything without conferring with your party first" because sometimes it is necessary to touch things. But absolutely yes, don't go around groping objects willy-nilly.

Yes yes yes, a thousand times yes!

Bringing in and using your own light source for the sole purpose of searching for MIA tokens is probably fine. However, using your own light source for in-game purposes is explicitly forbidden.

Interesting idea!

I wouldn't describe this as a newbie tip, but I'll share my own technique for locating weapon tokens which have taken flight from the combat board. I take a thin strip of glow tape and wrap it nearly all around the token. Many rooms utilize UV lights which you can use to charge the photoluminescent material. You could also go outside before your run (during the day, obviously) and charge it in the sun. However, make sure you use tape made from strontium aluminate--a long-term glow material--not zinc sulfide. SA glow can last hours whereas ZS will only last 10-30 minutes. It's important to leave a gap in the tape or it will be very difficult to get your token out of the puck when it's time to leave the room.

that's a nifty idea, and a small UV flashlight is only 20 dollars to carry as well.

It's been mentioned, but I think the most important thing is to listen to the DM. When I DM, I will often repeat myself, and players still will not listen to me. The DM will not trick you. When the DM says "there's nothing on the book case that will help you", you should listen to them and then not waste time looking on the book case. Also as a DM, sometime I often give small clues to the party. When a player, such as the barbarian, says something that is on the right track, often I will say "Your barbarian is very smart for a barbarian." Listen, listen, listen to the DM!

Out of game tip:

The tokens have a metal core. This is important for two reasons:
1. They stick to magnets.
2. TSA will have a small fit if you try to take a large quantity through the airport (at least at other-than-Indy airports). If you do take them through the airport, don't stack them too densely together that they need to unload your whole suitcase to see the rest of what's in there. You can ship them to yourself at your hotel to make your travel easier.

If you don't have too many, bring them in your carry on, and put them in a separate bin. That is what TSA at MSP has always had me do, and last year they didn't even stop me.

Of course, I have my tokens in bags, loose, not stacked in boxes.

There is usually more than one way to solve the room. Be creative, look for other clues, and listen to the DM's descriptions.

For new players I cannot stress enough that token management while in the dungeon is critical.

Please check out these token wallets which allow you to easily review what you have on hand as well as they store fairly easily:

Squishies in the middle, take care who is first and last into the room.

Don't forget the runes for bards and that druids can communicate with animals.
