TOPIC: did you go to WhosYerCon 2014

Re: did you go to WhosYerCon 2014 10 years 1 month ago #13

We drove from the Pittsburgh area saturday morning and returned home sunday morning. That is a 6.5 hour drive. We came only for TD and would not have come to the con if TD gaming was not there. We registered for the con but did not buy any props. We visited the vendor hall but did not purchase anything. We checked out the rooms full of board games.

We stayed at the Baymont saturday night. The Baymont really was less than 5 minutes away and an easy commute. The room fee of $73 including tax seems very reasonable. Parking was sparse at the Clarion but we survived it.

We did not try any food at the Clarion after hearing a few mumblings about it. There were many reasonably good chain restaurants, like TGI Fridays, Cracker Barrel as well as fast food within view of the Baymont. We ate at those.

Attendance next year is uncertain since both kids will be away from home at college.

I drove for 4.5 hours to stay at the Baymont. We had booked for Fri-Sat, but with a looming winter storm, drove in Thursday night. The front desk accommodated us well, and gave us the block rate on a non-reservation night. The hotel was clean, friendly and close.
Breakfast left a bit to be desired, but was passable.

I brought one friend with me, and we both signed up for memberships online ($20/each). We both bought a die from the hotel fund. He came just for the con, itself, but was able to get onto a mini-adventure (his first ever TD run!)

I came strictly for TD, and he would not have come if I did not. We had 'brown bag lunches' Friday from the vendor in the bar/restaurant.

We both spent about $70-80 in the dealer hall.

Traveled 2+ hours over from Dayton, OH with my sons, Grayson and Ben. Paid for 3 memberships and added another $5 toward the donation for hotel fund. Stayed with friends that live about 15 minutes from the Clarion. Walked through the dealer hall a couple times, but wasn't really in a buying mode and nothing caught my eye.

We were just there for TD and probably wouldn't have attended if not for the fact that TD was there; but we did run a pathfinder scenario on Friday (Ruins of Bonekeep, lvl 1...it was brutal). We had planned for another on Saturday, but ended up not doing it, and instead my sons did the paint and take and tried out Artemis. Then we went and spent some more time with our friends we were staying with. It was a wonderful weekend and all things TD were the highlights.

I enjoyed the more laid backness that is Whos Yer Con and will pretty much plan to attend at least one non-GENCON con every year with a strong preference toward wherever Jeff would choose to set-up shop.

I live in Indy so stayed at my place. Bought the membership online because it is only $20 bucks. Was only there on Friday and Sunday because I had to work Saturday. Came for the transmuting, TD experience, and to see the growing number of TD friends. I need play a number of board games I brought while sitting around. If TD wasn't there but I had enough friends there (unlikely if TD isn't there) I would still definitely go.

Came from central Ohio. Total cost of the convention and travel barring donations for me was less than $300. Came in Thursday and the entire convention still cost less than one day at GenCon.

Been going for 4 years now and will go again even if there was no TD. Just too many friends that go to not attend. The atmosphere at WYC is far better than GenCon but that is to be expected from a smaller con.

The food was horrid, same as last year. The first year the Con was at the Clarion there was a fabulous restaurant in the back. The hotel just does not understand that more than one level of dining option should be made available. Last year I went out to several great places with friends. Not an option this year due to the parking issues.

Bought nothing from the dealer's hall but I rarely do, even at GenCon.

I attended WYC for the second year in a row. I flew in from Minneapolis and stayed at the Clarion again. Anticipating the food and parking situations I stopped at a grocery store on the way in, had one 'meal' from the hotel offering, and one Chinese delivery. I paid to be a member, and spent about $50 in the Vendor hall. I played several board games but would not have attended without a true dungeon presence as a lure. I hope they choose to continue to partner with true dungeon even though it will force them to go to a bigger hotel.

I have gone to WYC for about 3 years now because I'm a member of Barfleet and we have a lot of overlap with the WYC crowd and of course... there's the party! I'm also part of a gaming sub-group of Indy Knights called Imperial Remnant that plays and runs Star Wars related gaming around the state.

TD Being there last year was a pleasant surprise and bonus as I was able to do some transmutes and ferry people to the demo tables to help drum up interest for Gen Con.

This year was more fun because of all the TD friends I've made in the last couple years. I was able to meet some new friends as well as get some transmutes and of course the runs. :)

I continue to help support the con by buying the membership. Between the free game(s), T-Shirt, and this year's inclusion of the full token pack, it's well worth the cost of $25. I don't normally shop the vendor hall but I have won raffles the last couple years. Oh, did anyone open any URs in their free packs? I bought a $250 Pack from Jeff while there and opened a Golden Ticket that I will use because that's awesome!

I'm local, so I don't get a room at the hotel myself. I travel about 30 minutes from home in Greenwood to attend. Parking wasn't much of an issue for me, other than getting around all the snow banks in the lot. There were always free spots when I arrived and when I left. The catered food in the dining area did leave much to be desired, and Indy isn't known for delivering much more than pizza in most locations. Keep in mind, it's a small fan-run con and they do what they can with the budget they have. It's possible that the catering choice was the hotel's and not the con's.

The Hotel itself is a nice small easy to maneuver location, but the con has outgrown it and they know that. There were plans to go to a new location this year, but because Indiana Comic Con swooped in and "stole" the normal weekend in March from WYC, they had issues just getting things rescheduled from what I understand. Next year there's every possibility that the con will be in a new larger location.

I enjoy my time at the con and TD has made it much better, you'll see me running around taking pictures. It will continue to be one of my yearly cons.

Oh yeah, regarding the actual hotel:

- The rooms were horribly lit. They were extremely dark, no movable light sources, and the few lights had shades attached which could not be moved. Made token sorting hard in your room.

- The shower had some hot water, but not very much.

- There was also an enormous daddy long-leg in the bathroom, which I promptly sacrificed. (Apologies to Lloth and the drow for this heresy).

However the hotel staff were always friendly and helpful.

I had heard about problems with the business center (printer not working, computer having a virus) but I didn't encounter any issues. And in fact used it to print faux 5th level cards when we discovered that only 4th level character cards had been brought from Carbondale.

I live near Indy, so just drove in to the con each day (and got in early enough to get a space each day).

Paid for WYC membership ahead of time, and donated for the die at the con.

Went to the dealer hall a couple times, but didn't find anything worth buying (that I didn't already have).

While TD is why I showed up, I do think I'd go again even if TD doesn't have a presence.

Booked Air travel from D.C. to Indy.
Stayed at Clarion Thursday - Sunday with 1 other.
Bought Member badge $25 + $5 die.
Went into the dealer hall at least 3 times browsing the old books .. nothing of interest at the end.

Was a fun Con ... but reason for attending was due to TD trading, people , transmuting and dungeons. In the end I will go every year TD is there with events, probably won't bother otherwise. This goes for even GenCon and other Cons. If TD is there I'm finding a hotel room close.

Watersomeplants ... No. there were no participation tokens given for the TD events.

I traveled approx 600 miles from Maryland to attend WYC (via plane) with my friend Shady. I stayed at the Clarion the whole time since I had booked early.

I purchased a membership at the con to support WYC and because I wanted a swag bag. Regarding random URs in the swag bags - I didn't pull one but I did talk to a non-TD player at the con who did.

I when into the dealer hall often to check the raffle drawings and see what was for sale, but I only spent $10 on some comics. I did buy a $250 pack of tokens from Jeff.

If not for TD I would not have gone to this convention. And I spent most of my time doing TD-related activities. However, the general atmosphere of the convention was so enjoyable and I had such a great time trying the few non-TD things I did, that I would want a repeat of the experience. So if TD is there again next year, I definitely will want to come back. If TD isn't there, I would definitely come back if I were local, but since I'm not, then that drops to a maybe. I wish I were local. :(

Oh, and regarding the food... It was pretty boring, but that really had no baring on my enjoyment of the con. When I'm in convention-mode and having fun every second of the day sometimes I forget to eat anyway. :P
