In 2013 our plans call for us to add an additional adventure to the event. There will be two consecutive adventure modules, and each module will have two variations of either a combat or puzzle orientation. The first module called “Lycans Afoot” tasks the party to travel through a dark forest in search of a tower, while the second module called “Golembane” challenges the party to reach the top of tower.

TOPIC: Riddle reveal videos

Riddle reveal videos 11 years 3 months ago #1

I thought these videos were well done, though since done live, they were a bit hard to hear at times.

With that caveat, I'd like a little more information about two things:

1. the Guardian fight in Golembane was fairly complicated and didn't get discussed much. There were multiple targets on the slider board and intervening obstacles that were not discussed in the video. I would love some clarification.

2. The rope puzzle in Lycan's Afoot. The description and a quick shot of the solution didn't explain to me what we did wrong. Would love a little bit more information here too.

Agreed. If they just filmed a walk though of every room and then later added the sound of two people discussing the video in quiet room it would be much easier to hear.

1. And the Guardian fight was way more complicated than they stated.

2. How did your group try to solve the rope puzzle?

Haphazardly.

I thought we actually had it, but either failed while doing it or something else went wrong - cause admittedly it didn't look quite right.

If the pentagon has posts:
1
5 2
4 3

I thought the answer was to put a black rope from 5-3 through a white rope from 1-2. And repeat(rotate) 4 times.

Yes, that was the answer. You sometimes also had to straighten the ropes out and make the star look really neat. But it sounds like you had it right. If it didn't look quite right, maybe you had a rope or two on the wrong peg.

Well now that the Riddle Reveal videos are out, I feel comfortable sharing. :-) I GMed The Guardian (Golembane Combat, room 5) on Friday morning, so here's the deal with this critter.

Raw Stats (Non-lethal & Normal/Hardcore/Nightmare)
AC: 17/20/23
HP: 80/120/150
Attacks: x2 (Auto-hit, Magic Missile)
Damage: 8/10/12 Force Damage
Save Bonus: +5/+7/+9
Subtype: Construct
Size: Medium
Spell Resistance: None
Push Damage: 0/6/8

Construct Subtype: Immune to Sleep, Charm, Hold, and any magic which affects the mind of the victim. Cannot be sneak attacked or critically hit.

The Guardian had 2 special defenses:
Magimagnetic Field: Any metal weapons that struck The Guardian would become stuck and could not be used again until freed. There were two ways to shut off the Magimagnetic Field, 1) Deal 10 point of Damage to the Field emitter (special glyph on the back left of the combat board) or 2) Destroy the Guardian. The Guardian would put up it's Magimagnetic Field at the beginning of combat.

Force Cage: At the beginning of Round 2 of Combat, The Guardian would erect a Force Cage around it. This was represented by a wooden board being placed across the combat board, about 1/4 way up. The wooden board had 3 grooves cut into it that the pucks could fit through (on Hardcore and Nightmare, the board only had 1 groove). There were two ways to shut off the Force Cage, 1) Deal 10 point of Damage to the Cage emitter (special glyph on the back right of the combat board) or 2) Destroy the Guardian.

The reason for the lack of push damage on Non-Lethal & Normal was probably due to the fact that this was a Treasure Room, and failing to defeat the monster meant the didn't get the Treasure Stamp.

The emitters for The Guardian's special defenses could NOT be targeted with Auto-Hit spells (such as magic missile), to hit the emitters required a puck to be slid and land on the emitter glyph.

This creature had much lower than normal HP, probably due to all of it's special defenses.

My observations as a GM:
While I liked the idea of the Force Cage, it needed to be tweaked at bit. The grooves needed to be cut to be a touch more forgiving.

Most groups that defeated the monster while I was there usually had a good first round from their melee, after that (when the force cage went up) it was all about their casters nuking the creature into the ground as Melee would be almost useless. (Can not count how many Druids used Spell Surged Firebolt or Call Lightning.)

I had one group smash the Force Cage emitter on Round 1... completely by accident. They made quick work of The Guardian. When I showed them what would have happened had they NOT destroyed the emitter, they were very pleased with their stroke of good luck.

Yeah, I also really liked the concept of the Force Cage. It was an extremely interesting obstacle that needed to be dealt with during a combat. But it could have been a little more forgiving. I can't remember how many rounds of combat our group's first slide ended up right in front of the middle hole in the board, so then the next five or six slides were just trying to get that first slide out of the ways.

We were also surprised that the Guardian wasn't the last room; it was quite odd to have the last room of a combat run be a puzzle.

Side note, I'm surprised by how much AC the monsters all had on Hardcore. How exactly are red players supposed to get more than +2 or +3 to hit? +1 Weapon, Gauntlets of Ogre Power, maybe Wicked Charm are the only things that come to mind, which still means you'd need to slide an 18 to even hit the Guardian.

My typical red build for a slider class starts with +1 weapon/Gauntlets of Ogre/Belt of ogre power then piles on +damage and +saves items in that order but ya thats about all you get for +to hit unless you add a wicked charm or start getting into purples (hence why I start all my builds there). Beyond that ya you just had to slide really well.

You're forgetting to calculate in the bonuses from the classes' Strength and other special abilities:

Fighter/Dwarf Fighter - +2 Melee Hit/Damage from Str, +2 from class ability

Barbarian - +3 Melee Hit/Damage from Str

Ranger - +1 Melee Hit/Damage from Str

With Gauntlets and Belt of Ogre Power and a +1 Weapon, you're looking at:

Fighter - +7 to hit
Barbarian - +6 to hit
Ranger - +4 to hit

That's totally reasonable for the Fighter and Barb. For the Ranger, I'd want to use Wicked Charm or some other Strength booster.

Were you supposed to leave weapon tokens stuck in the "Force Cage"? Our DM was unclear about that, so one round was basically useless for the weapon holders. Fortunately, with Adeya's spellcasting prowess, the golem still went down with relative ease.

I can't speak to what other GMs did, I can say I was pretty forgiving when it came to the Force Cage; if sliders didn't make it through or only got part of the way through, I allowed the sliders to be cleared (but not reslid). Any Slider that made it through the Force Cage I left until the end of the round.

Our DM did not do the Magimagnetic Field, unless there were items that would negate that effect?

The one thing that has bugged me for three weeks now - what was the password? Or was that just a red herring? If I had run it one more time I was going to try "zephyr"
