In 2013 our plans call for us to add an additional adventure to the event. There will be two consecutive adventure modules, and each module will have two variations of either a combat or puzzle orientation. The first module called “Lycans Afoot” tasks the party to travel through a dark forest in search of a tower, while the second module called “Golembane” challenges the party to reach the top of tower.

TOPIC: Puzzle Damage

Puzzle Damage 10 years 9 months ago #1

Just wondering if the damage from puzzles counts as Trap damage or Retribution damage. If it doesn't, is it its own form of unpreventable damage?

From everything I've read before or heard people talking about Trap Damage is damage from a trap in the room. A puzzle isn't considered a Trap nor is push damage from being pushed out of the room for failing to complete the puzzle. Retribution damage is damage you take for attacking something and hitting. I.E, Monk punches big firey lava dude with bad breath. Monk take 10 fire damage for hitting him. That fire damage is Retribution damage. So a puzzle's damage wouldn't be considered Retribution damage.
You don't have to outrun the monster, just the guy next to you - The buddy system.

Everything I have ever read or heard says that puzzle damage is unavoidable.
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

Neither

as seen in the Quick Token Reference and the Token Database :
Trap: a physical or magical hazard that gets sprung on the party as they advance through the adventure. Puzzles are not traps. "Push" damage as a result of not completing a room challenge in time is not a trap. Puzzle and/or Push damage might sometimes be described as a "trap" for flavor purposes, but their damage is not mitigated by this item.

Trap damage can be mitigated by Ring of Warning or Ring of Dire Warning .

Puzzle damage generally is not mitigable, but there may be certain circumstances when it is. Ask the DM in that specific room if you are unsure.

Push damage can never be mitigated.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?
Please post TDb corrections in this thread .

Thank you all. I had assumed as much, but the optimist in me had to ask.

And potentially Boots of the Leopard (for "mechanical" traps)? :P
