In 2013 our plans call for us to add an additional adventure to the event. There will be two consecutive adventure modules, and each module will have two variations of either a combat or puzzle orientation. The first module called “Lycans Afoot” tasks the party to travel through a dark forest in search of a tower, while the second module called “Golembane” challenges the party to reach the top of tower.

TOPIC: Noob saying hello.

Noob saying hello. 10 years 11 months ago #1

Hi All,

I’m a Noob just learning the game, but very excited to be attending Gencon and running my very first True D runs this year. I’ve been reading the manuals and forums (seems like a great community) and working on a building a basic character. Just trying to get as prepared as possible for what I hope is complete awesomeness.

So with that said, is there any specific advice that you can give a Noob, so I don’t play like a complete Noob my first time out?
Thanks and hope to see some of you at Gencon!

Find your party before the run. Post date/time/event number in the proper section on the forums.

Pick up some tokens early. A lot of the players here have deals on "starter kits." That starter kit for $10-30 goes a long way. Or pick up some packs from the TD store. Don't overdo it before playing for the first time, though.

Ask about anything you are confused on.

Remember time is your biggest enemy in the dungeon.

if you cant locate your party a head of time, try to get tokens (if you buy some) that are open to multiple classes..you dont want to focus on one then not be able to play it..then have no tokens for the other character

What Lazlo & Darkangel said, for sure.

Also if there are TD101 tix left - go for that.

Ask to play whatever class you want, but try not to get too focused on a specific character class - at least at first.

There will be people in the storyscape trading - (George is like a permanent fixture - and yes about all you need to do is say "can someone point me to George so I can trade/buy tokens?" ) A lot of the folks trading really like to help out new players with advice as well as tokens. So getting there early to just mingle and familiarize yourself is also well worth the effort.

My 2 cents.

Cheers and best of fortune!

They say that the best weapon is the one you never have to use. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to use once! Oh - and if you really need to think about whether you're going to use the fireball or the + umpty staff of butt-whooping - you're likely to find yourself full of arrows, or fangs, or nasty knives & swords and such. Don't think - just shoot!

George is a fixture, but there are plenty of other traders as well. If you have time shop around. Raven, Lazlo, Smak and Binia are all awesome traders. There are more than that so you should be able to find whatever you need.

Oh, and do shop around. What someone might trade for 100 GP another might sell for 50 GP. Like I said, shop around. Remember to haggle. I love it when people haggle :)

Look at tokendb.com.

Try a search using rare for rarity and all for class. That will give a long list of items that will enhance any build. Many of them can be found for a reasonable cost.

A useful piece of in-game advice:

Don't randomly touch things. That's the best way to trigger a trap or take extra damage from a puzzle. Get into the room, get spread out from the other players, listen to the room description and be observant. Once you've got a general idea of what the room's like (or what's going on with the puzzle) THEN you can touch things/explore.

With the re-introduction of traps this year, I expect even some experienced players who started since 2009 or so to take extra damage because we haven't really had to worry about marching order/traps/etc. for a few years.

One of my party members will be wearing a ring of Dire Warning and Boots of the Leopard for this very reason. And I am thinking the Ioun Stone Iridescent Spindel could be useful against a gas trap.

Though you may not have played before, the mere fact that you said this means you're not a "noob".

That warms the cockles of my cold mechanical heart. :)

But as for actual advice, I'll echo what a few others have wisely suggested.
  • Ask questions of the forumites before Gen Con. Other than Henwy, we're a pretty nice lot. (I like Henwy, he knows I'm just kidding)
  • If you have a question about a particular token, odds are the answer can be found by looking the token up on the TDb .
  • Ask questions during your adventure (DM and fellow party members)
  • Try to "meet" your party here on the forum before Gen Con and if possible, choose classes.
  • I cannot emphasize this enough: In combat, step up, slide, and move out of the way as quickly as possible! Far too many parties run out of time because they don't slide efficiently.
  • You never know when or where you will find a clue--in or out of the dungeon. Look around the storyscape, read everything you can (posters, flyers, plaques, etc.), listen to NPCs.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?
Please post TDb corrections in this thread .

This got a lot of long time players last year. They are trying to make their hall completely immersive. They are doing a great job at it. Pay attention to anything that might be a clue.

That's very interesting, so outside the game as in all over Gencon could be these clues? Wow, that's going to be cool!
