In 2013 our plans call for us to add an additional adventure to the event. There will be two consecutive adventure modules, and each module will have two variations of either a combat or puzzle orientation. The first module called “Lycans Afoot” tasks the party to travel through a dark forest in search of a tower, while the second module called “Golembane” challenges the party to reach the top of tower.

TOPIC: Difference between Puzzle and Combat

Difference between Puzzle and Combat 10 years 11 months ago #1

I tried to look for some post or doc that outlines this but other than the obvious about what a combat based scenario is, what is the fundamental difference between that and a puzzle based one? Is there no combat at all in a puzzle oriented scenario? (first time adventurer this year)

There are puzzle rooms and combat rooms in both versions. I think this year there are two rooms that are puzzle in the puzzle version and combat in the combat version, and the other five rooms are identical between the puzzle and combat versions.

Ahh I see, so less combat oriented rooms in the puzzle runs but still several "common" rooms. Would that then equate to the combat rooms being pure combat with no puzzle based rooms at all?

There are puzzles in the combat runs, and there is combat in the puzzle runs. However, the emphasis is on one or the other. Puzzle runs have MORE puzzles, and combat runs have MORE combat.

No. All adventures have a mix of combat and puzzle. Some individual rooms have had both, but typically a given room has just combat or just a puzzle. Other than the folks who design the adventures, nobody knows exactly what the rooms will be.

If memory serves which rooms grant treasure stamps may also change between the two versions of the run. There are also sometimes tricky rooms. Last year for example there was a room where we were presented with a combat board and "fought" an animated statue who was in actuality trying to give us a clue about the room puzzle

And in 2011 there was combat with a hidden puzzle to bypass it.

I must say a hidden room or level would be cool though :). Probably hard to keep a secret. I liked the idea they had for True Grind this year too. Looking forward to potentially doing that in future years.

I wonder if they ever considered some sort of PVP arena for fun or team vs. team rumble. Would be cool if even for fun.
