In 2013 our plans call for us to add an additional adventure to the event. There will be two consecutive adventure modules, and each module will have two variations of either a combat or puzzle orientation. The first module called “Lycans Afoot” tasks the party to travel through a dark forest in search of a tower, while the second module called “Golembane” challenges the party to reach the top of tower.

TOPIC: Changing the difficulty level.

Re: Changing the difficulty level. 10 years 11 months ago #13

I would agree it should stay NM. i bought some for a run and would hate to have to change it to regular. I'll never get a regular to change so it was my only chance.

Just for what it is worth - I know how hard it can be to get the runs you want. I would say in the interest of fairness to the intent of the system, that all efforts should first be made to trade or swap out the run. If absolutely no other option is possible and you are forced into this because of the gencon system and the mad hoard of ticket buyers... I would say it is ultimately fair (if Jeff and crew allow) to get 100% buy in from the group and go down a level. If the only option turns into Nightmare or no run at all... that hardly seems fair.

However - I have to believe finding a swap is possible - in fact start here and post your want for a run swap as a separate new topic. Nothing to lose...

They say that the best weapon is the one you never have to use. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to use once! Oh - and if you really need to think about whether you're going to use the fireball or the + umpty staff of butt-whooping - you're likely to find yourself full of arrows, or fangs, or nasty knives & swords and such. Don't think - just shoot!

While I try to run 1 of each NM run with teams, it is not always possible.

I fell victim to this for 1 run - I walked in with a NM ticket to a group who had purchased 9 of the others - kitted out with only the freebie packs from that year. While I did not want to give up the NM run - it really would NOT have been fun to grind through with this particular group as intended.

While this may sound harsh - if a run is intended to be NM, it should STAY NM - until players know that they cannot switch a dedicated run, the value of that dedication is negated.

Yes that happened to me twice in 2010 with the Evading Hilt, when I bought single tickets to designated Nightmare runs..

Both times the majority of the other players were completely unprepared. The first time we continued to proceed in Nightmare mode but took a walloping. The Minotaur slaughtered several players, and we couldn't even hit the darn thing. AC 28 meant that most of the players could only hit on a natural "20". And even then only one person can use melee so everyone else was using slings and bows with poor damage outputs.

The second time, the majority of the other ticket buyers were completely new to TD and didn't even fully understand how to play. So we decided to take it down a notch and do Normal, but every single room we had to explain to the DM that it was just a normal run and not Nightmare (that year, the Nightmare slots were for a given time so the DM's kept assuming that we were playing on Nightmare).

I think that was one of the last years I still tried picking up single tickets for dedicated Nightmare runs. Nowadays I find it more effective to find runs with forumites.

With 5 NM runs open, getting a slot for each alonside our beloved forumites can be tricky (though every year it appears to get easier and easier - Thanks Jeff & friends!). This is were a dedicated buy comes into play.
I can't help being a gorgeous fiend. It's just the card I drew.
