In 2013 our plans call for us to add an additional adventure to the event. There will be two consecutive adventure modules, and each module will have two variations of either a combat or puzzle orientation. The first module called “Lycans Afoot” tasks the party to travel through a dark forest in search of a tower, while the second module called “Golembane” challenges the party to reach the top of tower.

TOPIC: Lycanthropy Question

Lycanthropy Question 11 years 3 days ago #1

I don't see it anywhere, if already mentioned, I guess I missed it.:S

Is lycanthropy a magical, or non-magical disease?

quoting from page 11 of the 2013 Quick Token Reference

Lycanthropy is a magical disease that forces victims to undergo physical changes whenever they enter a fresh combat. Once infected, on the first round of combat in a subsequent room, infected characters may take no action other than spending the full round calming themselves as they attempt to resist the urge to go into their were-form.

The transformation urge will not manifest in the same room the infection occurred. If a character became infected in room three, that character would not feel compelled to transform until the first round of combat in room four—assuming room four is a combat room.

Unless cured, the lycanthropy infection and the first round of combat transformation compulsion will last the entire adventure.

How Does One Catch Lycanthropy?
Every round a character is successfully struck by a claw or bite attack from a lycanthrope (aka were-creature), that character must immediately succeed on a Fortitude saving throw or become infected with lycanthropy. Thus if an uninfected character were to be hit every round for 10 rounds, that character would need to make 10 Fortitude saving throws—one every round. However, a character that is currently infected does not need to make a saving throw if struck again by a were-creature.
The following items prevent characters from becoming infected with lycanthropy:
  • Harpy Claw Amulet
  • Potion Luna's Grace
  • Potion Moon Veil
  • Potion Wolfsbane Extract*
  • Shirt of Health
*may or may not prevent infection, depending on the result of the bonus saving throw

Paladins are immune to lycanthropy.

How Does One Get Rid of Lycanthropy?
The following items will remove lycanthropy from an infected character:
  • Good Fruit
  • Potion Moon Veil
  • Remove Disease (paladin special ability)
  • Scroll Cure Disease
  • Scroll Remove Disease
  • Scroll Remove Disease
Curing a character of lycanthropy does not prevent that character from becoming re-infected.

Though lycanthropy is sometimes colloquially referred to as a "curse", in True Dungeon it is a magical disease. Items that only affect curses do not affect lycanthropy.

Silver
Weapons & ammunition made from or coated with silver do not deal extra damage to lycanthropes. ( Silver Sickle is the sole exception—it deals +3 damage) However, damage from silver weapons cannot be regenerated nor magically healed by lycanthropes.

What would happen if we attempted to use something that would cure disease on a Lycanthrope? In either beast form or human.

Are we considering a character with lycanthropy to be a lycanthrope?

I guess I had assumed so, but you are correct it might not be. I thought if you were a Lycanthrope you were diseased, but possibly not. They may just transmit the disease and not be diseased themselves.

I thought it would be a good way to deal with possible diseased NPC's that we were unsure about. "Here if you are not a werewolf then you can drink this."

I was thinking of a player character - does getting lycanthropy mean they will be vulnerable to silver weapons?

considering that you don't get any cool effects excepting the first round of combat from then on, I think I will choose skip changing this year.

per Jeff:
  • Using an item that removes disease on a lycanthropic monster will not rid the monster of its lycanthropy.
  • Player characters infected with lycanthropy cannot magically heal or regenerate damage inflicted by silver.
As a reminder, in a TD adventure, PCs infected with lycanthropy do not change form. They struggle against changing for a round, then act normally.

LOL can another player give up their first round to scratch the infected player behind the ear (dogs love that!) to allow them to act?

Yes I am being silly...
