TOPIC: Thoughts on the Token Economy

Thoughts on the Token Economy 19 years 1 week ago #1

It looks like we may have a liquidity issue in the token economy.

Each bag token has a value of 311 GP if you can sell all the items, however only 31 GP of that value is actually gold. So most folks will have a lot of value but the value will be tied up items. Player vendors will only be able to buy and sell so much. A player vendor would have to buy 10 bags of token to get enough GP to buy one player's tokens.

We really need the NPCs to buy any Rare or Very Rare item for gold just to keep the economy moving. Otherwise we will be stuck doing barter for all of our trades. While barter is VERY authentic for a fantasy game it is also VERY slow. And given the limited amount of time player will have to interact with NPC vendors if some players did not get to trade tokens because the NPC venders were dealing other players.

If we have two NPC vendors and teams of 8 going at 12 minutes intervals, that means there are 3 Vendor minutes per player (if the poor vendor are not allowed breaks). You might get one barter trade worked out is 3 minutes but you might not.

With the NPCs buying for gold all the transactions Player to Player and Player to NPC will go much easier.

The Commodity chart is going to be a HUGE help.

I was thinking about this too. The situation will really depend on how they set the buy/sell/exchange one item for another rates.
If it's buy for 100% of gold, sell for 50% of gold, and trade is not allowed except for with gold, I would expect to see an initial large influx of gold as the power gamers spend their gold to buy every wand of cure light wounds, cure light wounds scroll/potion in sight. Later, as the casual gamer comes, they will very likely be selling their items for other items, if they can't use them for trading. With the limited amount of time for the whole experience, it would seem that they will go right to the shops after they talk to their party members.
