TOPIC: Masterwork Thief Tools

Masterwork Thief Tools 14 years 9 months ago #1

Quick question:
The tools say that it allows one skill retry per adventure.
If you opt for the retry, is the tool token consumed?
If not, how is it known if it is used or not?

Do Thieves' Tools stack with Ektdar's Tool? They do two different things, so I'm not sure. Can you start half-way AND retry a failed attempt?
You could burn both in one attempt, they do not stack per-say. You could:
1. Try and upon failure start over at the beginning with no penality with MW Tools
2. Upon second failure, start at the midpoint with ETT.

If you fail the third time, well....

Dave

Does ETT let you start over at the midpoint? I thought it only let you start the first time (or second time with MWT) in the middle. So it would be:

1. Try and upon failure start over with MWT. ETT would let you start at the midpoint on either (not both) of those attempts.

That answered my question, thanks!
I can give the Mastertools to our Rogue.
Marking the card makes sense since I would wonder if Rogues are truely ever on "the honor system".
I checked the guide, something I should have done first, sorry.

You must use ETT first, upon the first attempt failure, then if you have to try again for a third time, you can start over with MWT.

You can not use ETT to start a failed second attempt at the midpoint, and ETT can only be used once per room, unlike the MWT that can only be used once per adventure.

So that should have read:
1. First attempt fails, starts at midpoint with ETT, not setting off the trap.
2. Second attempt fails, uses MWT to try again from beginning without setting off the trap.
3. Third attempt fails, Rogue is done, trap goes off wounding the rogue and the Wizard steps in and Knocks the chest....

Dave

Dave,

I'm still confused by this. Reading the Token Guide, it looks like ETT has to be used on the first attempt, letting you start in the middle of the test. Then, if you fail that first attempt, you can use the MWT (once per dungeon) to try a second time, starting at the start of the challenge. I don't think you ever get three shots at a trap, at most you just get two.

Thanks,
Mike

Dave,

I'm still confused by this. I thought, with the ETT, you would use it to start your first attempt in the middle. I didn't think that it let you try and fail, and then start a second attempt in the middle. It doesn't say anything about getting to retry a failed attempt, just that it lets you start the first attempt in the middle.

Thanks,
Mike

This being my favorite topic... :)

Here's how I understand it:

1.) The thief makes her first attempt using ETT. She starts in the middle.
2.) If she fails, she can try again if she has the MWT and she hasn't used them yet. She starts at either end.
3.) If she fails again, the trap goes off and she takes damage. Then a Wizard (or Bard, right?) can use a Knock spell which opens the chest.

So, only 2 attempts by the rogue. I may be wrong, but this is how it's been explained to me. So, my understanding is that ETT allows a rogue to start in the middle and the MWT gives them a second attempt. I do not believe there is a third attempt.

Yes, it is two times, sorry. I am operating on my usual pre con 3 hours of sleep...

So:
1. Thief starts in middle, with ETT and fails.
2. Thief starts over with MWT and fails and trap goes off wounding Thief.
3. Shoot theif, promote Bard, and Wizard Knocks chest....

Dave
