Mike's opinion is how I interpreted the token, too. I wanted to make sure before I used a violet prism, because I can see a DM letting the spell be cast and countered before informing the party they have just wasted a healing spell and a prism charge. And if this happened in battle, so much the worse.

as a DM.. There's little to know you have that equipped unless you mention it.

Unless we start having folks keep their equipped tokens seperate, I don't see where the DM would know about it, unless it already cot used in that room to absorb a Bad spell.. and in that case, I'd go with the prior case, and offer the option of burn a charge / make a save. ( before I told you what the save was of course)

Ioun stones aren't written down on the party card?

Mike's suggestion is the same when you think about it, as changing weapons uses up no action, I don't see why plucking your ioun stone out of orbit or putting it back in would take an action. So if your cleric goes to heal you and you pluck it out w/out using an action and then but it back in again for no action, what's the difference from just calling it out when you're using it...?

Like I said, make it easy on yourselves and DMs. I like the idea of the DMs asking if you absorb the spell before they ask you to roll a save. It gives the player a chance to say things like:

"Yes, here is my Violet Prism"
"No, but I am immune to this effect because of my Y"
"No, but I will subtract X pts of damage because of my Y"
"No, but I will take half damage from this damage because of my Y"
"No, but I get X bonus to this type of save b/c of my Y"
"No, have mercy!"

Player cards are all fine and good, but remember you only have 12 minutes in the room and you probably want the DM to be responsive to you instead of reading a very detailed player card. Why I think verbally telling you DM as well as having it on your player card makes the experience much more streamlined.

Here's a question from another thread that never got answered: If someone cast web at you and you were wearing a Violet Prism, how would that work? Are you not entangled so long as you don't move or is the spell completely absorbed for the benefit of the entire party?
It doesn't look optional to me, it looks like it absorbs the spells whether they are good or bad.

Of course - you can always disable it before the good spell is cast, so that it isn't active and doesn't absorb the spell.

I feel the wording on the token could use some clarification, which will probably be in the token guide.
But until we get word from on high I agree that the stones are automatic and non selective while in use. With the other stones would a PC begin to drown until the DM was informed of his desire to use the properties of his Iridescent Spindle or the arrow fired from ambush or trap not hit until after the PC was questioned about his Faceted Amber that was lazily circling his head? I think in all cases the stones operate in a deliberately automatic fashion.

The same goes for the web spell, if the PC is targeted. And about that only the DM knows for sure.

I also agree that it should be a free action to de-activate a stone temporarily, if at least one of your hands are free.

There's my two cents. Well, maybe two and a half.

I veto your opinion and submit utilitarianism as my own.

There's no reason to read the token that way because there is no possible positive outcome for it. Walk it through and see. Why produce what can only qualify as a dick move for no gain.

I have a hunch that few, if any, DM's will try to have the Ioun Stone absorb a good spell like healing, even if the wording on the Stone indicates that is what would happen. The DM's have always seemed to err on the side of the player, in my experience.

You also have to take into account that there is only so much room on the token for text, so they may be leaving wording like "does not affect beneficial spells cast by the party" to be covered in the Token Guide - or just assumed.

I suspect it won't absorb any positive effect cast by players. I also suspect it won't absorb and Area Affects even if they happen to "target" a player, unless they only target 1 player but then it wouldn't be an area affect. Something like fireball or web affect the entire room and don't target a specific player per say but still effect them. The question would be something like Chain Lightning, and IMO would stop only when that player got targeted, hopefully he'd be targeted first.
Sweet a combat room, we won't take damage!
