TOPIC: Very Latest Common-Rare Token Images!

Re: Very Latest Common-Rare Token Images! 15 years 6 months ago #13

I like the new token sets a lot. The artwork is great, and I like the idea of having options for similar armor and weapons. There may be similar items from previous years, but it allows for more personalization of the character. One of the problems I had with MTG was that pretty quickly all the decks looked the same. If you had the money, there was one best deck to play. At this point I am not sure I see 1 single best set of tokens for most classes. Great job Jeff!

Um, as much as my massive ego would like to take credit for this year's tokens, it is pretty clear that my role is more like the guy at the meeting that writes down all the good ideas on the whiteboard. Thank goodness you guys and gals are here to take the tokens from "pretty okay" to "sweet!".
Common:

Fireseed Hollyberry - this looks like the only token that uses 'One' instead of '1'. While I like 'One' better, I doubt changing all tokens to that would make much sense time wise, space wise, etc.

Masterwork Arrow - 'pt' needs a period after it.

Obsidian Dagger - same as Fireseed Hollyberry, seems numbers are used on most of the tokens. Might as well stay consistent. Also to stay consistent, the class restriction should read 'All classes except Cleric' and loose the parentheses.

Pugio - How about shrinking the image on this one a little bit? As it is the image is bigger than most of the other weapons yet a dagger is the smallest of them.

Scroll Detect Life & Scroll Detect Glyph - Do these scrolls work like Detect Poison? I am a little unclear on what 'allows detection' means. Is it like Detect Magic where you walk around with some form of UV light? If not, maybe the text on Detect Poison is more appropriate. Something like 'Reveals all Glyphs in room'.

Shuriken - For consistency, '2/round' should be '2 per round' also '1 use per combat' should be in parentheses.

Silver Sickle - to stay consistent with the way daggers are worded it should read 'All classes except Cleric & Wizard'

Spiked Buckler - should read 'Adds +1 to AC'. Also none of the other class-specific items mention 'only' or have parentheses. How about just putting 'Ranger'.

Uncommon:

Faerie-Iron Club - should say 'All classes except Wizard'

Good Fruit - 'and' should become '&'

Greater Mistletoe - Does this need to say permanent item? All of the consumables are pretty obvious (e.g. scrolls, potions) or specifically say '1 use only'. How about something like '+1 to spell damage'

Masterwork Shuriken - Same as Shuriken above.

Oakspirit Armor - should be 'Adds +7 to AC'

Scroll Hypnotic Pattern - how about wording it like 'All monsters in room are -2 to saves'

Wolf Totem Armor - should read 'Adds +4 to AC & +1 to Reflex saves'. Also this is usable by all the same classes as Leather Cuirass, can you represent the classes along the curved line in the same way?

Thanks for going through all the tokens with a fine tooth comb! It is appreciated.

I still think the uncommon sling bullets should have their elemental damage dropped to 2 points. That would make it internally consistent with other tokens. Masterwork commons add +1 damage. Other uncommon ammunition lik the bolt of lightning add 2 points. Rares add 4. This gives us a good baseline for the future. We can remove a point in a future token to add a special effect, like a uncommon that's +1 to damage but does +3 vs something just like what's been done with weapons. It makes no real sense to neuter good arrows simply because you've created good bows. Bows are supposed to be better than slings. The ammo should be fairly even across the board.

I agree with H on the bullets...

We can also always tweek a monster here and there to be more vulnerable to blunt damage (even ranged) and less to piercing...

I really think we need monsters like this to make players re-think the weapons of choice...or switch on the fly.

We saw some of that this year with the stirges...I mean - hit them with a dagger - not a GREAT SWORD!...less risk!

I still don't get how people managed to him themselves and others. The stirge board wasn't all that difficult and you only had to nick any part of it to hit.
Thanks for going through all the tokens with a fine tooth comb! It is appreciated.

No problem at all, I enjoy it actually. I love consistency. Must be the perfectionist in me. =D

Anyway, I was working my way through the Rares when I noticed something. The 'Adds' word that is used on some of the tokens (especially + to AC ones) is completely redundant. A bunch of tokens (Cap of the Owl, Runestones, the Essences, etc.) don't have it and they read just fine. Perhaps instead of maintaining consistency with prior token sets it would be better to come up with a consistent format for token abilities going forward.

For example:

{modifier} to {attribute} & ...
'+1 to AC'
'+4 to AC & +1 to Reflex saves'

Entire List

Belladonna - Allows another save attempt vs. poision when applied?eaten? +2 to Fort. saves
Potion Essence of Mandrake - +2 to Will saves
Potion Essence of Mistletoe - +2 to Reflex saves
Faerie Water - Purifies 1 cubic yard of water or liquid
Fireseed Hollyberry - +4 to AC Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Paladin, Ranger & Rogue
Masterwork Arrow - +1 to damage (1 use only)
Obsidian Dagger - Breaks after 1 combat All classes except Cleric
Pugio - All classes except Cleric
Scroll Acid Spray - Does 5 pts. of damage if AC-15 is hit
Scroll Color Spray - Monster is -2 to saves
Scroll Detect Life - Reveals any life in room
Scroll Endure Elements - Immune to natural fire or cold
Scroll Detect Glyph - Reveals all Glyphs in room
Shuriken - (Monk can use 2 per round, 1 use per combat) Fighter, Monk & Rogue
Silver Sickle - +2 to damage vs. lycanthropes All classes except Cleric & Wizard
Skunkweed - Immunity to sleep when eaten (1 use only)
Sling - Usable by all classes
Small Darkwood Shield - +1 to AC Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter & Paladin
Spiked Buckler - +1 to AC & usable as off-hand weapon Ranger
Tindertwig - Damages 2nd monster if 1st monster is hit (1 use only)
Slingstone of Stunning - Normal damage & DC-12 Fort. save or stunned for 1 round (1 use only)
Slingstone of Thunder - +4 sonic damage (1 use only)
Torc of Natural Armor - +2 to AC

Additional Notes:
The bonuses vs. Fey on the weapons were additive so I updated the armor bonuses vs. Fey to be additive as well. Makes more sense to me, what do you think?
Sling Bullet = Uncommon, Slingstone = Rare - should be one or the other
Hard Rations - How about renaming this to '1 Day's Hard Rations'. Seems to me this would fit better with the other common 'gear' (10 Foot Long Pole, 50 Ft. Rope, etc.)
'Usable by all classes' tokens - You mentioned in another thread that tokens that were usable by all didn't need a class list on them. Why not extent then same for weapons? Or if that's too drastic, how about just putting 'All' or 'All classes'?
'All classes except X' tokens - How about on these we remove the word 'classes'? It doesn't really add anything and just takes up space.
'(1 use only)' tokens - The 'only' seems superfluous as above.

5) Should the "Form: Wolf" be part of the name of the Potion of Polymorph (like Potion Polymorph Into Wolf)? That way you can make more Potions of Polymorph in the future without being confused that they have the same name, by including the name of what you are polymorphing into as part of the name of each. Otherwise, the name of all the tokens is the same (Potion Polymorph).

In the guide we can name it whatever we want. We just don't have room for more words in the title.

You managed to get Essence of Mandrake & Mass Cure Minor Wounds on one line, why not Polymorph Into Wolf? It's shorter than both. =D

Sometimes I think I'm insane....

Well off to do the Ultra-Rares! =D

It has to have the word "potion" on the token.

BTW - can one quaff a polymorph token with a belt of retrieval and then attack in the same round? Is it that instantaneous?
