TOPIC: 2009 Rare Tokens -- Feedback Please!

Re: 2009 Rare Tokens -- Feedback Please! 15 years 6 months ago #13

The hat of escape does look very much like the sorting hat, except no face.
It doesn't bother me if it doesn't bother Hogwarts.

It does seem like there should also be an autumn runestone.

I think overall these look great.
Of all the traits of humanity, there is only one we do not share with other species, which sets us apart and makes us unique
-- the ability to imagine.

I think the hat of escape is problematic. It's pretty much the ring of sanctuary from last year, just in a different slot. Duplication issues aside, it doesn't seem like a very good idea from a practical standpoint. I figured that since a ring slot is so valuable, not a lot of people would use the ring of sanctuary anyway. A hat is likely to see a lot of use since there aren't many helm alternatives for a lot of classes. That means that a lot of classes will probably wear this. I'm not sure it's a good idea to have to have DM's roll 2-3 saves every time they try to attack. It just seems like it would bog things down a bit. I guess you can argue that it's up to the players to decide whether or not to use an item that eats up time, but it seems strange to design something that seems to almost encourage it. I mean, at this point this would be the helm of choice for wizards, rogues, monks, bards, ranger.

I agree with a lot of the creep concerns listed by others. The rares should be compared to make sure that they don't exceed clearly exceed past rares without a good reason. It's not a bad idea to just churn out the average damage of the weapons and the classes it's available to just to find oddities.

Even if the torc is a magical item instead of an armor item, I think it will be useful to clarify what classes can use it on the token-- even if its is 'usable by all classes', that will be useful to have written.

I like the out of order damage wheel on the Faerie-Iron Club. Gives it a bit of character, as long as that will not be confusing to dm's during combat.

the damage wheel isnt out of order, those are supposed to be 9s. there are a few weapons with that problem.
Erp! =|

I assume the javelin is a ranged weapon?

I just noticed something about the long spear (both the rare and uncommon) is that it is usable by the Ranger, yet it requires 2 hands to use. This is the first 2 handed melee weapon usable by the ranger, does that mean the ranger, when using this weapon, only slides once? Or should the ranger not be allowed to use this weapon, keeping in theme with his dual wield abilities?

Also noticed the Darkwood Staff (uncommon and common) is usable by all, but the original Quarterstaff (and its +1, +2, and striking versions) excludes the Ranger and the Rogue. Shouldn't those restrictions also apply to the new version of these items?

Maybe the ranger can use it as a ranged weapon, but not a melee weapon?

The pics of the rings are wicked awesome!

The Long spear is not a compound weapon (that can serve as both melee and ranged) unlike a regular spear, a long spear is not balance for that act. It is basically a peasants in ranks weapon.

Will the Javelin be usable in melee combat like the bone javelin?
I'm so going to end up a squished pixie by the end of this year! Jeff what did I ever do to you? :sad5:

Maybe Jeff just wants to give your legions of protectors a good workout =)

Or maybe he's trying to convert them with all these tempting tokens. :O
Besides battling my asthma and allergies is a full time job!

On the Shuriken +1 'Fighter, Rouge, or Monk' should be 'Fighter, Rouge, & Monk' I believe this affects the common and uncommon versions as well.

+1 Arrow of Doom. I assume this is a one use item? If so, it should get a '1 use only'. Also, as others have mentioned already, damage wheel?

Slingstones. These probably need the '1 use only' line as well. The wording on the sinlgstone of dividing seems confusing. I'm not sure what to suggest. On the slingstone of stunning perhaps change the wording to 'Normal damage & Fort. DC-12 save or stunned for 1 round' (changed the '+' to an '&' and added a 'for')

Torc of Natural Armor. This should probably read 'Adds +2 to AC' to be in line with most other AC adding items. (e.g. Ring of Protection)

+1 sling and +1 darkwood staff - One reads 'Usable by all classes' the other reads '(Usable by all)' I think I prefer 'Usable by all' without parentheses but doesn't really matter as long as it's consistent.

Scroll Fireshield - I don't think the '+' is needed in front of the damage.

I still don't understand why the polymorph potion is limited to druids and wizards...

So, all of us Defenders of the Pixie Queen should be lining up for the Sword Of Cleanliness, with a special +3 Damage vs. Dust Mites? =)

*little laugh* Pretty cute.

But I told you I'm no queen.

All the faerie/fey stuff this year is way cool! I haven't seen this much fae token goodness since the artisan tokens of 06'. But this definitely exceeds it. Hopefully though I won't have anyone attacking us poor pixies helping in the tavern.
Although is my own fault for touting my Thimble Helm, and Paperclip Chainmaille. May have to stay extra close to my bro at GC for protection with all the fae smashers that will be running around next year.
