One song, one bonus. Easy. Done.

As a bard myself I would agree one instrument one song. The main reason for this is that yes there are one man bands out there but how many of them are really good and those that are good I would call them the exception. (As a poet bard it is hard enough for me to concentrate on making up bad poems in the middle of combat let alone using two instruments at the same time, yeesh!) It makes it simpler for Jeff and crew this way. Plus I think different instruments that do different effects are awesome. Since your character stays at level three this allows for the bard songs to evolve. Like a Harp of Healing which should allow for +1 hp to gained for every spell or potion consumed while bard is playing. Or Cymbals of Chaos where the monster get a -2 to their hit rolls. Even how about as a purple Lyre of Life after a full minute of playing if the bard gets a 15+ roll they can bring back a dead companion. See there are many things you can do with different instruments and I haven't scratched the surface :)

Lady Myke

Just make the different instruments in the future imbue the bard's weapon/attack with a slight dmg bonus or give them a slight dmg resistance to specific types of damage.
