No, I just used it as an auto hit, which when the Druid rolls in with AC 30 the look on their face that you hit them is priceless enough.  =D

<br />Why would the shield now be a helm? I thought it made a lot more thematic sense as a shield, not only as a nod to past DnD shields of reflection but all the way back to Clash of the Titans. Not to mention, it would fit the whole item balance where we usually have AC +X for an item or AC + (X-1) with a special ability as compared to the tower shield last year. Changing it to a helm directly upsets this balance giving us a +3 AC helm with a special ability which makes it immediately better than the dragonscale helm available just the previous year which only had +2 and a special ability. Seeing as they were both sets it's clear that one is better than the other (Not that i even ascribe to the theory that being part of a set somehow offsets an underpowered item).  I guess you could make it a mithril helm if the AC were dropped to +2 which would make it sort of on par with the dragonscale helm, both being +2 with a special ability. It just seems sorta odd to lose the theme elements mentioned above. Was there any particularly good reasoning behind shifting it to a helmet?<br />

Some of us roll quite a few 20s... trust me - you wouldn't want us to be able to crit on one of the days when I'm rolling hot.  In many cases, it would be an insta-kill.

Those should be the risks of it all. I never knew that players didn't take crit damage and it makes me sort of sad. There should always be that fear in the back of your mind that even as an AC 30 druid you could go down on a lucky roll. Maybe adjust it so that it's not instakill, I'm not a fan of the idea that any single hit can take a player from full to zero, but being critted round 1 (especially on nightmare) should leave you with just slightly more hit points than a terminal cancer patient.

But I agree with H - there should be some impact when a 20 is rolled...<br /><br />How about the player takes normal damage - but they are stunned and miss one round of action?

That's a very nice balanced view. I vote for Gary's suggestion if additional damage can't past muster. Also because I want to see the codpiece in print so I can snicker about it.

yes yes - auto hit on anyone targeted...and normal damage (or even +5 extra...) and then the player is stunned 1 round no action.<br /><br />Seems fair!<br /><br />OR maybe that is Hardcore...and at normal speed - the DM has to re-roll and if they roll another 20 - then as above??<br /><br />Just tossing things out!
