TOPIC: Orcish Sickle

Orcish Sickle 15 years 8 months ago #1

So, anyway, I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but why can't druids use the orcish sickle?  I mean, druids are supposed to be able to use sickles, right?  Is it a game balance thing, or is it just because orcs are generally destructive by nature?  (But if that last bit were true, shouldn't they be unable to use the orcish dirk, either?)

Game balance...<br /><br />Umm, honestly it was probably an oversight when the token was made.

<br /><br /><br />I noticed this when the final list of tokens was published.<br /><br />The reason is because the Orcish Sickle was not always a Sickle. In the initial versions it was a broadsword (an Orcish Broadsword to be exact), so it made sense that the Druid could not use it. But then people started complaining that the picture didn't fit for a Broadsword so they changed it to a Sickle, and just didn't bother with re-examining the class restrictions.<br /><br />You can find the original thread discussing this here:<br /><br /> truedungeon.com/trueforum/index.php?topic=3466.0 <br /><br />(Page 1, and especially Page 2 are most applicable).

For what it is worth -- The actual blade used in the photo is an Ethiopian Scimitar c. 1930s-1940s from the personal guards of King Helie Selassie.  It is a variant of the ancient Kopesh style of sword with the cutting edge on the outside of the curved blade and not the inside like a normal sickle style blade.  So despite the name, it is a style of blade that a druid could not use.

Interesting observation. Like many medieval weapons, the sickle had its origins as an agricultural tool. The cutting surface was on the inside so that it could cut grasses. I may be wrong but I don't recall the sickle every being used as a weapon in a significant way, but it looks neat and has been associated with the druid in the genre for ages.

It was never a serious weapon of war.  When it was used it was mostly used by conscripted peasants.  It actually makes a very ineffective weapon.

<br /><br />I understand what you mean about it not really being a sickle, but you did describe the weapon as a scimitar which is defiantly a druid weapon. So, from my viewpoint, either description of the blade is a style that the druid can in fact use. (according to D&D at least)

<br /><br />As I said, while it is called  or named as a scimitar, it is actually a variant of the kopesh.  If I named or called a M-2, 50 cal. machine gun "a mace of holy blunt multiple projectiles"  I doubt the DM would allow it for a cleric to use.  It is a matter of function and not just name that applies.

<br />Thankfully there are no pole-arm tokens yet... the taxonomy thread for that would be something else.<br />
Legally... its questionable. Morally... its disgusting. Personally... I *like* it.
