Me and my friends thought it would have been cooler to have an Illithid (Mindflayer) Tentacle instead of the Ooze.

That would have been totally awesome! Instead of Mindflayer Ooze get a Mindflayer Tentacle and instead of Stirge Spittle get a Stirge Wing ... Ooze and Spittle just seem kinda gross ...

As if that mind flayer wasn't phallic enough.

I almost overheated when I first saw the Mindflayer ... I couldn't keep my paws off him ... he was SO HOT ... he could suck my brains out anyday ... but I'd hope we could come up with a better use for those tentacles ...

You got ACTUAL outsider feathers? Very kewl!

Yep ... remember how there were a couple of stray feathers in the room as prop hints? - well, I guess after teardown, a couple of guys found them lying around (I guess they didn't seem worth packing up) and I managed to get one from Brian K and one from another DM! I currently keep them next to my "I Survived TD" pins!

I went in 8 times. My runs were 3/8 normal combat, 3/8 nightmare combat, and 1/8 nightmare puzzle, and 1/8 normal puzzle.

Pull Summery
6/8 Giant
5/8 Mind Flayer

Normal Giant Combat Side
The key puzzle ate up way too much time. Once we knew we had to hurry, then we were able to kill the giant. I got normal pulls 1/3 times. The first two groups failed.

Nightmare Giant Combat Side
The key puzzle ate up way too much time. Once I just attacked the giant to get things rolling. I got nightmare pulls 3/3 times.

Normal Giant Puzzle Side
1/1 I did not figure this one out.

Nightmare Giant Puzzle Side
1/1 I did not figure this one out.

Normal Mind Flayer
My normal groups killed this guy 4/5 times. A great deal of the failure had to do with the slowness of the GM reading the monster seemingly for the first time. This was quite frustrating.

Nightmare Mind Flayer
My nightmare combat groups killed this guy 1/3 times. We were never able to do enough damage.

What I ended up with after trading on Saturday
Ingredient

Outsider Feather

X GP

It would seem that at least on the last day of the runs (when I was trading), the distribution was so that my stocks ended out about even. I do not recall how many of what ingredient items I pulled.

Summery
It was my experience that the Outsider Feather would be the hardest to get (normal groups failed most of the time for me, as the puzzle ate up way too much time). The second hardest to get would be the Mind Flayer Ooze as that monster was particularly difficult on nightmare (one time on normal I failed, most likely, as the GM was reading the rules on how to run the thing . . . one can not attack when the GM is reading rules). The easiest would be the Stirge Spittle, one Chain Lightning took care of the room.

Stirring paint? Doesn't sound very romantic or exciting to me, but if you're into that then all the more power to you.
Just curious what everyone thinks is rarer: the Mind Flayer Ooze or the Outsider Feather.

During my runs, I managed to pull something like 4 Stirge Spittles and 4 Outsider Feathers (but no Mind Flayer Oozes). Tried trading around but everyone else I found also had lots of Spittles and Feathers but no Oozes.

During the last day I encountered several people who had tons of Oozes but no Feathers and they seemed to think that the Feathers were the hottest new ingredient.

The Stirge room was certainly beatable (though it was challenging on Nightmare where the Stirges took 2 hits to kill and did 4 points of automatic damage each round). Plus, there was sometimes the opportunity to get a second treasure pull in that room, so I do think that Stirge Spittle is the most abundant 2008 ingredient.

The Mind Flayer was easy on normal difficulty (just 60 HP I think) but he was extremely hard on Nightmare with 100 HP. I agree with Mock26 that, at least on Hardcore, the Mind Flayer encounter was the most difficult. I knew of several groups who couldn't kill him in time (since only one player could melee and several were often stunned). Plus lots of groups wasted too much time in the hallway. On the combat side (and especially Nightmare Combat), it was pretty hard to kill him and get his treasure, which is why I thought that the Ooze was the rarest ingredient.

I actually found the Ogre/Giant to be quite easy, and in all my runs (including Nightmare) we dispatched him quite readily. I hear the puzzle side had an Armor Puzzle instead of encountering the Ogre. Maybe the puzzle was really hard which is why some people had difficulty finding feathers. Any thoughts?

I haven't read the other responses, but can tell you this from a DM and Player perspective:

The Feathers could be obtained in the Puzzle 5 treasure chest. Only about three groups in five hours (so perhaps 1/8 groups) were able to solve the puzzle and draw from the treasure chest.
I assume the Feathers could also be obtained from the Combat 5 treasure chest. Most groups were able to dispatch the giant, with probably only 1/5 groups failing to kill him.
I don't recall a treasure chest in Combat or Puzzle 6.
This would mean that the combat run, Giant Room (Combat 5) was the place to snag the Feathers.

Ooze.
IMO, difficult on any level. I think we killed him once out of two Normal and one Nightmare runs. I have one Ooze.
The most rare of the three ingredients.

Just seeing someone's comment about the rouge's test in Combat 5 - yes; it ate up too much time. From a player's perspective, it would have been better to walk in swinging to allow for that extra minute or two of combat time.

Had I not pulled 3 feathers from the Room 5 Puzzle box, I would be hurting for Feathers even more than I am!

I think the overall rarity order is as follows:

Feathers
Ooze
Spit

(Although the Spit was hard for me to get until Peanut handed me some! It was the opposite for me. I didn't get any Ooze until my last run on Saturday but had already gotten Feathers and Spittle.

Lady Myke

Out of a total of 3 runs, my group never did pull a feather and had to trade for it.

Out of my 4 runs we never got a feather (2 puzzle runs normal, 2 nightmare runs combat, 0 Tokens draws). We beat the mind flyer both puzzle runs and got 3 oozes (between me and sons).

Between my friends and I, we ended up with 3 feathers, 2 oozes and 1 spittle.

Already traded the feathers though.

On one run, we only got 2 Feathers and 1 Ooze. This with a HoP in the party. At least it's better than last year's run in which we got zero ingredients.
Actually, I don't think anyone drew a rare, combo, or anything this year. Last year we got a +1 Full Plate, though.

Re: What's Rarer: Ooze or Feather? 12 years 1 month ago #36

I came out of the dungeon with 16 ingredients and one combo item across 3 runs. (Horn of Plenty in effect every run) I don't recall what REDS if any I got...but I have to say (even with my second run - no draws - due to DoMT curse in effect...) I was very pleased with the haul of Ingredients!!!

Best pull was getting three Feathers from the Blacksmith treasure chest OR was it getting the Medallion of Greyhawk from the Mindflayer treasure chest?

What was there a possible 4 boxes in 2008? Stirges, Mindflayer, Giant/Blacksmith, Outsider room?
