TOPIC: Dave: Are the new tokens thinner by design?

Dave: Are the new tokens thinner by design? 15 years 7 months ago #1

I noticed that I can fit 20 Minotaur Hide tokens into a Medallion Coin Tube, but with the “other” 2008 tokens I can only fit 18 in a Coin Tube. I would much rather fit 20, than 18. The 20* per tube puts a token in line with the thickness of a high quality clay poker chip. I can fit 20 poker chips into a Silver Mediation Coin tube (I was told by a company that sells them that a $1 Silver Mediation coin is nearly identical in size to a poker chip).

Did you guys make them thinner? If so, that rocks!

If you did not do it, than it still rocks. See if they can keep making them like the Minotaur Hide tokens!

I heard on NPR that the cost to ship a container from China to the US has gone up from $3,000 to $8,000 since the war in Iraq began (I think that was the timeline). Perhaps they are lowering the mettle core a bit to make them cheaper to ship (or perhaps make). If so I hope they are not doing so without your consent. I have not weighed the tokens (not sure if I have a scale capable).

Out of curiosity what is the mettle core made out of? Perhaps we can break open the 100’s of ropes and whatnot and make a trip to the recycling center.

*Edit: I put 18 in this spot in error. Sorry.

I had noticed too that some of the tokens were of differing thicknesses. Jeff will have to follow up. I do not know if it is a setting on the stamping press or what.

I have no idea what the metal core is made of. It must contain some ferrus metals because it is attracted to a magnet, but I do not know what the exact mix is. The outer layer of plastic is darn difficult to get rid of, so I think if we persue recycling we would need to find a place with a shreding separator that would be able to take them whole.

That is on my list to look into.

Dave

I am not sure what happened to your tokens. I will try to find out. This is the first I heard about it.

Since the tokens are affected by magnets, I would say that it is some kind of iron alloy like plain old steel.

Heh. I packed a bag of tokens in with my carry-on bags, not remembering the metal core, and the TSA was all 'WTF?!' over them in the x-ray line.
Blimey!

I was shocked that SNA TSA and INDY TSA both did not have issues with my token case this year...one lady looked at the x-ray twice but when I said poker chips - she nodded and let it pass right through!!

However, once again my holy symbol bugged them...oh yes and a box of trading cards caught their attention as the packs were foil or metalized in some manner.
