TOPIC: Do I read this right?

Re: Do I read this right? 15 years 9 months ago #13

I talked with Jeff. Because the original token did not restrict use, we will not, for now. So the guide is correct and the FAQ #5 is wrong. We will modify it from the next version.

Thanks! That sounds like a great solution!

Dave,

If you modify the Gauntlets token the next time it is printed to have class restrictions, are the 2003-2008 Gauntlets still going to be usable by all classes since they have no class restrictions on them?

One possible solution would be to change the name of the token also, so that all the Gauntlets of Ogre Power are usable by everyone, and then from 2009 on the Gauntlets of Mighty Strength (or whatever you want to call them) have the restrictions.

Thanks!
Mike

I would hope if they are restricted in a future version that past versions would have the same restrictions, even if they are not listed on the tokens themselves. I think the role-playing aspects (druids don't wear metal, gauntlets would prevent wizard's spellcasting) sometimes should take precedence over the simplicity of play aspects (the tokens don't list class restrictions, so there shouldn't be any).

I would hope past version wouldn't have the same restrictions, because for True Dungeon probably 99% of the players (or more) will never read a token guide, so the wording on the tokens is all they will have to go by. Why do something which will cause problems and unhappiness for players, for a flavor purpose that has no significant impact on the game? Especially in this case, where for the entire history of the game to date there have been Gauntlets of Ogre Power, and they have never had a class restriction. TD will have to explain to players not only why there are class restriction on the older tokens that aren't shown on the token, but also why (for return players) why the classes they have always been able to use Gauntlets with can no longer use them.

It seems a far better solution to come up with a new item that takes the belt slot and gives +2 to strength that has the proper class restrictions, and leave the older tokens as is? As has been mentioned before, it could easily be explained that the gauntlets are leather, or dragonscale, or some other material that Druids and others can use, which would solve the "flavor" issue.

Sorry, I prefer the "flavor" to the creation of another magic item that does the same thing. As far as people not reading the guides, you could just add info to the character cards.

In terms of simplicity and elegance, Dave's solution is the correct one, but I would have preferred the "flavorful" solution.
No problem, different people will have different opinions and preferences, and I'm sure Jeff & Dave will take all those opinions into account, plus what is best for TD and the players, when figuring out what to do. That's the great thing about different opinions, it gives Jeff & Dave more options to consider when figuring out what to do.

Oh, and kind of a side note - I actually LIKE it when they come up with different items that do the same thing, rather than just printing the same thing all the time. I like the fact, for instance, that this year has a Orcish Dirk instead of a dagger, and all the other one-for-one substitutions they made. If they came up with another item, with another name & picture, that added two to strength and took the belt slot, I would prefer that to yet another printing of the same Gauntlets of Ogre Might.

Then you'd have characters with both Girdles of Giant Strength and Gauntlets! Wait, we have that already!
