One of my great TD memories was on a run with a group of strangers - the bard had a lute and was in costume. We started to fight a giant spider when he began singing "Particle Man," by TMBG! =D

Any TMBG song is great for the dungeon.
I think "Whistling in the Dark" is quite appropriate.

I always figure since they can't attack and sing(before the lute came out)that they need to do something besides stand there saying that they are singing, that they needed to sing....

Whatever is decided it just needs to be consistent from room to room.

Kim
If it's not required then that needs to be made clear to the dms. I've watched dms tell people playing the bard that they had to sing in order for their party to get the bonus.

Kim

I for one was told I HAD to sing and when I said I thought it wasn't required, the DM insisted. Well, it's a good thing I majored in music but no one wanted to listen to the Sound of Music. Humph. :| ;/

I agree with Kim, it should be clarified.

if you're using the lute...you can only swing your sword right? no spell casting?
it is something that we DM's decide on every year at the DM meeting.....

Perhaps I shouldn't post this here, but that's news to me.
My recollection is that, officially, IRL singing is NOT required, but is encouraged.
I don't think singing should be required. The whole point of True Dungeon is for people to have fun - and why make people sing if it makes them feel very uncomfortable and makes them dislike the experience. Making singing optional works perfectly, that way those that really enjoy it can do it, and those that don't want to don't have to. We had one Bard that LOVED the singing and threw himself into it, and we had another bard that really did not want to have to sing out loud.

I think it should be consistent across all DM's also, so that you don't get a different interpretation from room to room.

For the last three years, I've been told it was required by multiple DMs - and I'm perfectly fine with that! Heck, most of the time I would "sing" out tips to the party and reminders to the DM (and even got tokens for it!). I can see why folks want consistency - but at the very least all you have to do would be hum/whistle something, and that would work. I'm planning on doing an instrument this year. I'll also be using a Widseth's Mystical Lute (sadly not my own) - and I get to take my first combat slide in my TD history!

The Sound of Music is a good song. Go ahead and belt it out if you're ever the bard in my group. =)
